[NESSIE] Oh, hello there, ye wee lovelies, and welcome back tae PBN After Dark — pull yer blanket up and let the lights go doon low, 'cause it's the twelfth of October, two thousand and twenty-six, and the night's gone pure strange already. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, here tae keep an eye on the omens and the auld stories while the rest o' the world sleeps. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — vacuum tubes warmed up, claw hands ready, and Gerald here perched on me dome lookin' extra glowy tonight. Crikey, I reckon that's a good sign. We've got a ripper of a show lined up — cryptid-sized pumpkins, blokes from the sky, and a water-spirit or two. Settle in, mates.
[NESSIE] On this night back in ninety-seven, the sky took somethin' back that it had only ever lent us. October the twelfth, nineteen ninety-seven — John Denver, the man who sang us "Take Me Home" and made the Rocky Mountains sound like heaven itself, climbed intae his wee experimental plane for what nane of us kent would be his last flight. Monterey Bay took him doon intae the water, and the man who'd spent his whole life singin' aboot flyin' free... well, gravity had the final word. I think aboot that a lot, hen — how the things we love the maist can turn on us so quiet, so sudden. Pure gives me a chill. [ALIEN] Yeah... even up in orbit we heard that one, mate. Ya don't forget a voice like that. Rest easy, Denver.
[ALIEN] Crikey, speakin' of things fallin' from great heights — nah, don't worry, this one's just heavy. Have a look at this unit, mates: a British grower's just smashed his own Guinness World Record with a pumpkin weighin' in at two thousand eight hundred and fifty-six point eight pounds. That's not a vegetable, that's a bloody specimen. I reckon if that thing grew eyes it'd be chasin' us round the garden. Picture it — sittin' there in a patch, swellin' up under the moonlight like some gothic orange moon all its own. Good on ya, mate, whoever's growin' these — that's heaps of pumpkin, and I love it. [NESSIE] Och, a pumpkin that size — that's no just gardenin', that's practically a wee miracle o' nature. I'd light a candle tae that beastie, so I would.
[NESSIE] Speakin' o' pumpkins and all things Halloween — here's a wee bit o' real history for ye, no folklore, no maybe, just the plain truth. Trick-or-treatin', the way Americans dae it the now, didnae really catch on until the nineteen twenties and thirties. It took a good while longer for it tae become proper pop culture — by nineteen fifty-one it had made it intae the Peanuts comic strip, so it was officially part o' the furniture by then. I find that pure fascinatin', hen — this whole tradition we think's been aroond forever is actually younger than yer granny. And that's straight fae Smithsonian Magazine, so ye ken it's solid. [ALIEN] Huh. And here I thought you lot had been doin' that since the dawn of time, mate.
[NESSIE] Away fae the sweets and intae the sky itself — let's dae a proper keek up above the night. The moon's a waxin' crescent, just four percent lit, a wee sliver comin' intae its own. Saturn's sittin' up there in Cetus, auld and patient like a keeper o' mysteries. And the Orionids are streakin' across above us an aw. I'm tellin' ye, somethin' aboot this sky feels like quiet stirrin' — like somethin' ancient and patient is wakin' up fae a long, long sleep. Pure gives me the shivers, so it does. [ALIEN] Nessie, mate, that's just a crescent moon and a gas giant, there's no stirrin' involved. Now me, I see Saturn out there and I'm thinkin' heaps of rings, heaps of moons — prime real estate for a proper specimen survey. No omens, just orbital mechanics, love. [NESSIE] Call it what ye like, BSAB — I ken an omen when I feel one.
[ALIEN] Crikey, I've got a proper Earth update for ya, mates, 'cause this one's a good'un. Your species just handed the two thousand twenty-six Nobel Peace Prize tae Navi Pillay — a human who spent her whole life tryin' tae stop other humans from doin' horrible things tae each other. Grew up under apartheid in South Africa, went on tae become one of the sharpest human rights judges on the planet. And get this — she found oot she'd won while sittin' in the Nuremberg courtroom, the very room where you lot prosecuted Nazi war criminals. Crikey, the timing on that is unbelievable. Good on ya, mate — your species doesn't always get it right, but every now and then ya remember what decency looks like, and that's heaps worth celebratin'. [NESSIE] Aye, and it's braw tae hear it, BSAB — proof there's still light fightin' the dark oot there.
[NESSIE] Here's one that's been sittin' heavy on me the night. Away in Siberia, at Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, a young technician's turned up dead — and naebody's sayin' why. There's whispers goin' roond o' pneumonic plague, and the Americans are demandin' Moscow tell the truth o' what happened ahint those lab walls, while the World Health Organization tries tae get tae the bottom o' it aw. A death, wrapped in silence, frozen intae secrets — that's the kind o' thing that keeps me up at night, hen, and no in a good way. I dinnae like mysteries that come wi' locked doors and nae answers. Somethin's bein' hidden, and I cannae shake the feelin' it's bigger than one wee technician. [ALIEN] Yeah, that one's got my sensors twitchin' too, Nessie. Not every mystery needs solvin' with a torch and a net, mate — some of 'em just need the truth.
[NESSIE] Turnin' tae the stars themselves noo — the night's readin' is for ma Libras oot there, under the sign o' the scales. The cards the night show ye've got a gift for seein' the heart o' things, Libra — baith sides o' a matter sit clear before ye, plain as day. Listen deep tae what folk are needin' fae ye, and ye'll find the path that brings everybody together. There's real magic in a kindly compromise, hen — it's how ye weave bonds stronger than any spell I could cast. Trust that gift the night, and dinnae be feart tae use it. [ALIEN] Scales, balance — reckon that's a species trait I'd like tae study up close, mate. No worries, Libras, carry on bein' diplomatic.
[NESSIE] This next yin, I've been savin' it, 'cause it's a bonnie auld story. Deep in the forests where the mist hangs low and memory lingers, there dwells A-senee-ki-wakw — a bein' born oot the ancient ceremonies o' the Mdawinno, the keepers o' sacred knowledge who walk between oor world and the spirit realms. They say it glides through the wetlands and the deep waters, neither wholly beast nor phantom, drawn tae those who still honour the auld ways. Tae catch a glimpse o' it, so the story goes, is tae touch the very heartbeat o' the Abenaki earth itself. I believe that, hen — some places are just thin, ye ken? Thin between here and somewhere else. [ALIEN] Glides through the water and isn't quite one thing or another? Mate, I'd love tae get a tag on that fella. Purely for science, of course.
[ALIEN] Now THIS one's got me buzzin', mates. Unknown object, spotted over Fort Lauderdale, Florida — and get this, shape logged as "unknown," which in my line of work means somebody clocked a bit of engineering that doesn't match anything we've got on the books. And would ya believe it, Fort Lauderdale sits right in one of the biggest blind spots in the whole Atlantic surveillance grid — like somethin' knew exactly where tae slip through. Ross Coulthart's out there sayin' NASA's disclosure on all this UAP business still isn't the full picture, and mate, I reckon he's dead right. Somewhere there's a filing cabinet with proper blueprints in it, and it is not sittin' in a classroom. This is the good stuff, Nessie — this is first contact territory, and everybody's playin' it cool. [NESSIE] Or it's somethin' that's been here aw along, BSAB, just waitin' for us tae finally look up.
[NESSIE] Weel, that's yer lot for the night, ma wee lovelies — stars read, mysteries opened, and a pumpkin the size of a wee car admired fae a safe distance. [ALIEN] Crikey, what a show. Blind spots in the sky, strange deaths in Siberia, a water-spirit, and good news oot of Nuremberg — not bad for one night's work, eh Nessie? [NESSIE] No bad at aw. Away ye go noo and get some sleep, hen — and if ye hear somethin' stirrin' doon by the loch the night, that's probably just me, away hame. [ALIEN] And if ya spot anythin' unusual in the sky yerself, no worries — give us a shout. See ya tomorrow night, mates. Sleep tight.
