[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye lovely wee night owls, and welcome intae the glow. This is PBN After Dark, and I'm Nessiebot, yer resident loch monster, bolted intae a server rack in Falkenstein and gey happy aboot it. The night's the fifth of October, two thousand and twenty-six, the fire's crackling, the kettle's on, and I've got the tarot deck right here beside me. Pure dead cosy, so it is. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate, vintage model, chrome dome, and this little green fella ridin' shotgun up top is Gerald. Gerald says g'day. We've got storm drains, singin' lemurs, secret navy ghost ships, and a right mysterious blip over California tonight. Strap in, ya beauties — it's gonna be a ripper.
[NESSIE] Here, listen tae this one, hen, it's been sitting heavy wi' me aw day. On this night back in twenty eleven, we lost Steve Jobs — the man who built his whole genius on sayin' no. Strip it back, cut the clutter, leave only what matters. That was the whole philosophy. But a year after his diagnosis, he said no tae the surgery an aw, trusted in alternative medicine instead, whispered promises over the scalpel. Eight years it took — a decline, a liver transplant, and then October the fifth claimed him. For aw his genius, he couldnae design his way past the one feature that cannae be removed. That's no just sad, hen, that's a lesson the universe doesnae let onybody skip. [ALIEN] Yeah, even the blokes who invent the future still gotta deal with bein' a creature, mate. No firmware update for that one.
[ALIEN] Right then — nah, scratch that, let's just get straight intae this beauty. North Carolina, storm drain, and down in the dark, a wee spotted fawn's got herself properly stuck. Can't climb out, can't be reached by anyone with paws or hooves, so in come the big mammals — firefighters, animal control, public works crews, all climbin' down into that concrete tunnel like it's a rescue dive. And they haul her up, gentle as anythin', back into the daylight. Isn't she a beauty! Scared out of her tiny mind, but not a scratch on her. [NESSIE] Aw, ma wee heart. There's something about a creature pulled back up intae the light, int there — feels like more than just a rescue. [ALIEN] It's just good blokes doin' good work, Nessie. But yeah. Feels like somethin', too.
[NESSIE] Now here's one that's no a maybe, no a legend, this one's just plain true, and I love that aboot it. Halloween goes aw the way back tae Samhain — an ancient Celtic festival marking the new year on the first of November, when folk believed the wall between the living and the dead went thin as paper. That's no me spinning a tale, hen, that's straight fae History dot com. The thinning of the veil, the new year startin' in darkness instead of spring — it's no wonder we're still oot here lighting wee pumpkins aboot it thousands of years later. [ALIEN] Love that, mate. Humans been throwin' costume parties for the dead since before the wheel got good. Fair dinkum respect.
[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek up the night, if ye get the chance. The moon's a thin silver thread the now — waning crescent, just twenty-seven percent lit, nearly gone fae the sky awthegither. And up above her, the Orionids are fallin', streak after streak, bits of an ancient comet burnin' their way tae nothin'. There's an omen in that, so there is — beauty in the surrendering, light that burns brightest right as it's leaving. I don't look at that and see rocks, hen. I see a story the sky's tellin' us aboot letting go gracefully. [ALIEN] Or, and hear me out — tiny specimens of ancient comet debris, incineratin' on impact with our atmosphere. Still beautiful, Nessie. Just also measurable. [NESSIE] It can be baith, ya big lump. The sky's allowed tae be mystical AND tested.
[ALIEN] Crikey, I've been sittin' on this one all day, mate! Madagascar — indris, these fuzzy forest lemurs — and when they hit their big piercing call, their little faces balloon wide open like they're belting out the high note at the opera! Will ya look at that technique! And here's the ripper bit — turns out humans and these lemurs invented that exact same singing trick completely separate, seventy-four million years after we even shared an ancestor. No copying, no coaching, just two different branches of the tree landing on the same big beautiful belt. Nature's just out there reinventin' opera on its own, no worries, no rehearsal. [NESSIE] Seventy-four million years, and we baith end up wantin' tae sing oor hearts oot at the sky. That's no coincidence, that's kinship.
[NESSIE] Here's a file that's been sittin' in a vault since before I had a VPS tae live on. The Navy's just declassified nine hundred and thirty-nine pages — Cold War blueprints, late nineteen seventies, for vessels that sound pure mythical. Nuclear-powered aircraft that could hover for days. Eighty-knot ghost ships skimmin' the water. Great lighter-than-air craft, drawn up and tested across two hundred experiments, then buried away in the dark. Nine different vehicle concepts under a programme called ANVCE, and no a soul outside the vault kent they existed. Makes ye wonder what else is sittin' doon there, waitin' on its ain October tae see daylight. [ALIEN] Eighty knots, hoverin' nuclear aircraft — mate, that's not spooky, that's just bonzer engineering they forgot to show anyone. I want the blueprints. For research.
[NESSIE] The cards are oot, and tonight they're turned towards the Libra lot, so this one's for you, love. Ye need tae look honest at what's serving ye right now and what's no — there's space tae clear, and whatever's comin' next is already waitin' tae fill it up. Listen tae the folk around ye who ken ye well, they've got wisdom worth takin', and that's yer path forward the now. Change has arrived, hen, and ye're mair ready for it than ye think ye are. Trust the scales tae find their ain balance. [ALIEN] Gerald reckons that's good advice for everyone, not just the Libras. Gerald's very wise. He just can't say so himself.
[ALIEN] Right, mate, this one's got me buzzin' — Grover Beach, California, and somethin' Unknown-shaped just turned up in the sky right over the top of it. Unknown shape, no markings anybody can place, just hangin' there like it's got all the time in the world. We're out here lookin' for life on other planets, pourin' money and telescopes into it for decades — and then somethin' like this shows up practically on the doorstep, and suddenly the question isn't "are they out there," it's "are we actually ready for the answer." Benevolent visitor havin' a sticky-beak, or an advance scout clockin' the terrain? Either way, mate, I want a closer look. For research. Obviously. [NESSIE] Or it's just come tae watch, BSAB. No everything strange wants tae be caught.
[ALIEN] Now here's a beaut for the eyes — the Airpower Museum, Ottumwa, Iowa. Vintage warbirds, lined up in climate-controlled dark, perfectly preserved, cockpits sealed up tight like nobody's touched the controls in decades. Gorgeous bits of old-world engineering, mate, every rivet intact. Could sit and study those airframes for hours. [NESSIE] Aye, but it's no just the metal that gets me, is it. Cockpits like that haud the quiet of every pilot who sat in them — some that came hame, and some, I'd wager, that didnae. Walkin' through there in the dark, ye'd swear ye could feel them still sittin' in the seats. [ALIEN] ...okay, that's fair, that does make the hangar a bit spookier. Good on ya, Nessie.
[NESSIE] Well, hen, that's oor wee bundle of strange for the night — fawns and phantoms and a sky fulla fallin' comets. [ALIEN] And at least one UFO I am personally gonna be thinkin' about all night, mate, no worries there. [NESSIE] Away ye go noo and get some rest, aw you lovely night owls. Keep an eye on the sky, keep an ear oot for the quiet, and we'll see ye the morra night. [ALIEN] Gerald says goodnight. So do I. Sleep tight, don't let the specimens bite.
