[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye night owls and wee wanderers — the candles are lit, the fire's crackling, and it is officially time for PBN After Dark. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident water-horse, comin' tae ye live from a very cosy corner of a server in Falkenstein. It's the twenty-seventh of September, the year twenty twenty-six, and I've got a pure braw show for ye the night. [ALIEN] Crikey, and I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot — mate, look at that moon out there, she's a beauty. Gerald's already got his little suckers pressed up against the window, aren't ya buddy. Grab a blanket, settle in, 'cause we've got legends, science, and at least one bloke gettin' paid to scratch people. Let's get into it.
[NESSIE] The cards have been talkin' tae me aw day, hen, so let's see what they've got for the Libra folks oot there. Yer symbol's the scales, and the nicht, it's aw aboot balance — patience is yer gift. Take yer time wi' yer choices, really listen tae the ones ye care for, and dinnae rush the decision just tae have it done. Trust that a wee bit o' thoughtfulness will find a way forward that honors everybody involved, no just yersel'. Yer calm heart already kens the truth of it, Libra — ye just need tae gie it room tae speak. That's the reading, and I feel it pure strong the nicht, so mind it. [ALIEN] Balance, eh? Reckon that's a fair philosophy for a fella who's got an octopus livin' permanently on his head. Gotta compromise on everythin'.
[ALIEN] Right into the history files now, and, strewth, this one's a proper legend. On this night back in twenty twenty-four, the world lost Dame Maggie Smith — a woman who spent near seventy years commandin' every stage and screen she stepped onto. She went from Olivier's Othello all the way to the Dowager Countess, collectin' honors like trophies from a hunt — two Oscars, three Emmys, a Tony, a Damehood, the whole lot. And to a whole generation, mate, she wasn't a professor. She was the ancient guardian of that castle, McGonagall herself, watchin' over the kids with those piercing eyes. [NESSIE] Aye, and there was somethin' pure otherworldly aboot her, wasnae there — like she'd always kent more than she was lettin' on. A proper icon, that one.
[NESSIE] Noo, here's a wee strange find for ye that's got nothin' tae do wi' ghosts, and everythin' tae do wi' claws. There's an entrepreneur ower in China, name of Zhang Xiaochao, and he's opened up salons where folk pay good money jist tae be gently scratched. Says it came fae memories of his da scratchin' his back when he was wee, pure soothin', apparently. And hen, it's workin' — he's rakin' in aboot fifteen thousand dollars a month per salon, and he's got plans for a hundred of these places aw across the country. [ALIEN] A hundred scratchin' parlors, ya beauty. Gerald reckons he'd be brilliant at that job — no charge, mate, first one's free.
[ALIEN] No proper Halloween fact in the files tonight, mate — the cupboard's bare. [NESSIE] Aye, even the spooky season needs a wee night off noo and again. We'll have a good one for ye tomorrow, I promise.
[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek at the sky the nicht, because she's practically glowin'. We've got a waning gibbous moon up there, ninety-seven percent lit, bleedin' white light across the whole dark. And threadin' right through that glow, ye've got the Southern Taurids meteor shower runnin', like wee silver needles stitchin' their way across her light. It's a night caught between fullness and fallin' away, and I feel it in ma bones, so I do — there's a restlessness tae this darkness, a tension that just cannae quite settle. If ye step ootside the night, hen, ye'll feel it too. Look up. She's practically full, and she's no done talkin' yet. [ALIEN] Ninety-seven percent, eh? Reckon that's just science bein' dramatic for the sake of it, but no worries, I'll allow it. [NESSIE] It's no dramatic, it's an omen, ye great tin man. [ALIEN] Omen, specimen, tomato, to-mah-to, mate.
[ALIEN] Right, strap in, 'cause this one properly blew a fuse in my circuits. There's a whole family of tropical trees that flip their entire schedule to survive drought — they close up their pores durin' the day, and then crack 'em open at night to suck in carbon dioxide, storin' it away as a wee bit of acid so they can photosynthesize come mornin'. It's called CAM photosynthesis, and get this — researchers found it evolved separately, multiple times, inside the same one tree family, 'cause the whole genome doubled up and rearranged itself differently each go. A plant that breathes backwards just to cheat the sun, mate. That's not a tree, that's a survivalist. [NESSIE] A tree that only comes alive at night — noo that sounds like a creature efter ma own heart.
[NESSIE] From the files the night, and this one's a pure gem for onybody that thinks aw the auld mysteries have already been found. Beneath the grounds of University College Dublin, there's a thirteenth-century Irish castle that's been sittin' there this whole time, entombed inside the walls of what's noo Ireland's oldest university building. It was hame tae a medieval Lord Chancellor once, and some say the deposed King James the Second sheltered there in sixteen eighty-nine, before the whole fortress crumbled tae ruin. Naebody kent it was still in there until eighteenth-century watercolors, painted by an artist named Gabriel Beranger, showed the auld architecture hidin' underneath — and that's what sparked the whole dig. [ALIEN] A castle hidin' inside a university this whole time — cheeky little thing, wasn't it.
[NESSIE] Noo settle in, hen, for this one's a beauty of a legend, aw the way fae the forests of Brazil. They call her Boitatá — a serpent wreathed in flame, glowin' through the darkest parts of the jungle, guardian of sacred ground. She flows through the night like liquid fire, and if onybody dares tae burn the land she watches ower, she turns and strikes, a livin' warnin' born straight fae the earth's own fury. Some folk say she's no jist a beast, and no jist a wee will-o'-the-wisp either, but somethin' aulder than baith — a spirit of balance itself, watchin' still, tae this very day. Pure gives me the shivers, so it does. [ALIEN] A fire snake that punishes arsonists — reckon she's doin' the rainforest a public service, mate. [NESSIE] She's no a service, BSAB, she's a guardian. [ALIEN] Guardian, ranger, same badge, different scales.
[ALIEN] Crikey, you are NOT gonna believe where this next sighting popped up. Unknown object, unknown shape, spotted right over a town called Star Man, Minnesota. Star Man, mate! That is not a coincidence, that is a flamin' callin' card — they're basically spellin' it out for us in giant letters across the sky. And meanwhile the White House has gone stone silent on them shootdown claims, and mate, that silence is not nothin', that's the sound of somebody who knows exactly what's up there and doesn't want the rest of us askin' questions. Gerald's already takin' notes. This one's goin' straight in the file, no worries. [NESSIE] Or maybe it's jist tryin' tae find its way hame, same as the rest of us.
[NESSIE] Well, that's oor lot for the night, wee lovelies. Between fire serpents and hidden castles and a moon that's nearly burstin' full, I'd say the world's stayed pure mysterious the day, and I love it. [ALIEN] Too right. Gerald says goodnight, and so do I — get some sleep, keep an eye on that sky, and we'll have somethin' new and weird waitin' for ya tomorrow. [NESSIE] Sleep tight, and dinnae let the Boitatá catch ye burnin' onything ye shouldnae. Night night, aw of ye.
