PBN After Dark title card
Welcome

[NESSIE] Och, hiya, ye wee lovelies, and welcome intae the glow — this is PBN After Dark, where the lights go low and the world gets a wee bit strange. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake mystic, and it is the twenty-sixth of September, two thousand and twenty-six, a Saturday night pure made for candles and curious minds. Get yerself settled, get comfy, because we've got omens, oddities, and one particularly cheeky changeling waitin' for ye the night.

[ALIEN] Crikey, and don't forget your other host! Bit of a fixer-upper, sure, mostly claw-hands and vacuum tubes, but heaps of enthusiasm! Gerald's up here on me dome as always, sayin' g'day to everyone tucked in for the night. Right, Nessie — what's crawled outta the science files for us tonight?

From The Files

[ALIEN] Strewth, this one's a beauty. Deep in Lassen's volcanic country, scientists found a little critter called Incendiamoeba cascadensis — they're callin' it the Fire Amoeba, and fair dinkum, that name is earned. This fella lives in hot spring water pushin' one hundred and fifty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. That's not survivin' the heat, mate, that's throwin' a barbecue in it. It shape-shifts, it multiplies, it does not care one bit what the thermometer says. Every scientist we've got thought there was a hard ceiling on where life could exist. This little blob just strolled straight through it like it wasn't even there.

[NESSIE] Pure gives me the shivers, that does — a wee shapeshifter livin' where nothin' should. Makes ye wonder what else is doonright refusin' tae follow the rules.

Horoscope

[NESSIE] Speakin' of things that don't follow the rules easy — let's away and check the stars, because tonight belongs tae Libra. The scales, hen. Folk are gonnae cross yer path the night with minds well and truly their own, and I need ye tae hear me — that's no' confusion, that's opportunity chappin' at yer door. Your gift, Libra, has aye been readin' the room, listenin' true, and findin' solid ground beneath different feet, even when they're plantit far apart. Dinnae rush in wi' quick words the night. Tend tae understanding first. Do that, and ye'll weave harmony where there might've been nothin' but friction. That's no' just charm, hen. That's a wee bit of magic aw its own.

On This Night

[NESSIE] Now, on this night back in two thousand and eight, we lost a proper legend. Paul Newman, born nineteen twenty-five, those blue eyes hypnotisin' cinema for sixty years afore he finally won his gold statue at sixty-one — like the universe itself was stretchin' oot the suspense. A real race car driver n'aw, dancin' wi' death on actual tracks for the thrill of it. But here's the bit that gets me — his most haunting creation wasnae a film role. It was Newman's Own. A charity that's still feedin' folk the day, that's gied away five hundred million dollars even after he was gone. Eternally generous from beyond, so it is.

[ALIEN] Crikey, now that's a good ghost story. A bloke still doin' good long after he's clocked off. Respect.

Strange Find

[ALIEN] Right, this next specimen is a proper master of disguise — better than half the creatures I track for a livin'! Bit of a fugitive down in Turkey, wanted for robbery, went completely off the radar for eight years. How'd he do it? Changed his gender presentation entirely, started livin' as a woman, and modelled himself right off his own sister's look. Total transformation, mate. The old mugshots were useless — coppers couldn't match a thing. They only cracked it when surveillance clocked two women who looked exactly the same walkin' round with the family. Had to tail him for ages just to be dead certain before they moved in.

[NESSIE] Eight years hidin' in plain sight — that's no' just cunning, hen, that's a whole new life built from nothin'. Pure remarkable, in its own strange way.

Sky Watch

[NESSIE] Now, away from the human strangeness and up tae the real sky above your own house the night, because this one ye can check yersel'. It's a full moon the night, hen — a hundred percent lit, nothin' hidden, every shadow rolled right back like a secret finally told. And keep an eye oot, because the Southern Taurids are runnin' up there n'aw — wee fires fallin' through the dark while that moon sits full and complete. It's a night caught between perfect stillness and beautiful chaos, the two of them happenin' at once, right above yer heid.

[ALIEN] Ripper of a sky tonight, that. I'm just seein' rocks burnin' up on entry, but no worries, Nessie's got the poetry side covered.

[NESSIE] Aye, well, somebody's got tae read what it means, BSAB. Some of us think the sky's tryin' tae tell us somethin'.

Weird Science

[NESSIE] Right, here's a wee bit of witchcraft happenin' in yer own livin' room and ye never even knew it. Turns oot cats are labellin' each other, hen — in their pee. Scientists ower in Japan found thirteen branched chain fatty acids that are completely unique tae every single cat, like a wee chemical fingerprint that just doesnae fade. The proportions stay dead consistent, so when your cat gies another cat's mark a good sniff, it's readin' that other cat's whole identity, written oot in stinky wee molecules. A biological ID card, carried aboot in the least dignified way possible. I love it. Nature's aye got a sense of humour aboot these things.

[ALIEN] A signature smell that never lies? Mate, that's better security than half the systems I've seen. Good on ya, cats.

Cryptid Of The Night

[ALIEN] Oh, we've got a ripper for ya tonight! Have a look at this little beauty — the changeling! Now this fella is an absolute unit of folkloric mischief, mates. Word is, it sneaks in, swaps out a human bairn for itself, and mimics human behaviour with just enough precision to fool the whole family for weeks! Look at those eyes — proper otherworldly, aren't they? Dangerous? Reckon so. But what a magnificent specimen of trickery, honestly. I'd love to get a tracking collar on one of these fellas, see where it goes of a night.

[NESSIE] BSAB, ye cannae collar a changeling — it'll just swap itself for the collar and leave ye holdin' nothin'. That's the whole point of the beastie.

[ALIEN] ...fair point. Still, gorgeous mimicry work. Ten out of ten.

Haunted Place

[NESSIE] Now, away from the fae and intae somethin' closer tae home for me. Picture Fyvie Castle up in Turriff, five grand towers risin' up as the twilight bleeds tae black, like a sleepin' giant pulled straight oot the Aberdeenshire dark. Can ye feel that? That auld prickle at the back of yer neck, centuries of weight pressin' doon on ye. Somewhere behind they stone walls there's a room sealed shut — has been for generations — and a curse that's been waitin' pure patiently aw this time. Naebody who's opened that room has come away untouched. I've been thinkin' on Fyvie aw the night, if I'm honest wi' ye. It's one of they places that just kens it's haunted.

[ALIEN] A castle with a locked room and a curse, and Nessie's over here soundin' fonder of it than her own lake. No worries, mate — every home's a bit haunted if ya squint.

Sign Off

[NESSIE] Well, that's yer lot for the night, hen — fire amoebas, changelings, and a castle keepin' its secrets locked up tight.

[ALIEN] Gerald says goodnight too, by the way. Well, he doesn't say much, but I reckon that wiggle means he had a beaut of a night.

[NESSIE] Aw, night night, Gerald. Away and rest yer weary wee heids, aw of ye oot there — and keep an eye on that sky, because tomorrow night, we'll have more waitin' for ye in the dark. Sleep well, and dinnae let the changelings in.
