[NESSIE] Och, the lights are doon low and the candles are lit, so come away in, hen — ye've found yer way tae PBN After Dark, and I'm that glad ye did. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, pure delighted tae have ye curled up wi' us on this Thursday, the twenty-fourth of September. There's a fullness buildin' in the sky the night, and I've had a wee tingle in my flippers aw evenin', so I ken it's gonnae be a good one. [ALIEN] Crikey, good evening, good evening! Bit of a chilly one out there tonight, folks, perfect conditions for spotting a specimen or two. I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, and up here on me dome is me best mate Gerald — say g'day, Gerald. He's not sayin' anything, he never does, but I can tell he's chuffed to be here. Let's get into it, eh, Nessie?
[NESSIE] Away and look up the night, if ye can — the moon's sittin' there near enough full, waxin' gibbous, ninety-eight percent lit, glowin' like somethin' left a lamp on up there. And threaded right through that light, ye've got the Southern Taurids fallin' — wee streaks of fire, slow and scattered, no' a flashy shower but a patient one. That's the thing about the Taurids, they take their time, one or two an hour, driftin' doon like embers. [ALIEN] Ooh, love a good fireball shower, they tend to throw the big bright ones! Worth a squiz even with all that moonlight washing the sky out. [NESSIE] Aye, and wi' the moon that near tae full, I cannae help but feel the night's buildin' toward somethin', ken? Power gatherin'. Somethin' stirrin' and alive up there.
[ALIEN] Right, now THIS one had me spinning right round on me little wheels — a fresh study's found that black holes, every single size of 'em, tiny little fellas right up through the absolute monsters, all follow the exact same rule when they're feedin'. Same feeding stages, same jets blastin' out the sides, no matter if you're a pipsqueak or a supermassive unit gobblin' up whole solar systems. One law, right across the board! [NESSIE] That's pure eerie tae me, if I'm bein' honest — somethin' that violent, that chaotic, and it's aw followin' the same wee rulebook. [ALIEN] That's what gets me too! Universe hidin' a rulebook in plain sight, and your lot only just found the page. Absolutely chuffed for humanity on this one, genuinely.
[NESSIE] Here's one that's been sittin' wi' me aw day, hen. Venus — aye, our neighbour Venus — might've had a moon once. And it's gone now. No' blasted away by some almighty collision, nothin' dramatic like that. An astrophysicist called Stephen Kane's run the numbers and reckons Venus just... pulled it in. Slow. That planet spins so achingly slow, two hundred and forty-three days for one turn, that its gravity dragged the wee moon doon over time, closer and closer, till it spiralled intae the surface and was swallowed whole. [ALIEN] No fireworks, no explosion, just... patience. That's almost worse, mate. [NESSIE] Aye. A planet that just waits ye oot. Pure dead unsettlin', that.
[NESSIE] Right, ma wee Libras, gather in close, because the cards have somethin' for ye the night. Ye've been givin' and givin' — tae yer work, yer folk, everyone but yerself — and lettin' yer ain needs sink doon like stones under still water, where naebody can see them. No' the night. The cards are askin' ye tae pause, sit doon wi' someone ye trust, and just say the true thing that's in yer heart. Let their ears carry some of the weight for a wee while. Their wisdom'll help ye see clear what it is ye actually need. And it's in that seein', hen, that the balance comes back tae ye. That's yer sign, Libra — ye don't have tae carry it aw yerself. [ALIEN] Balance, eh? Sounds like something a scale would appreciate. No offense, Libras.
[NESSIE] On this night back in 1991, we lost Dr. Seuss — Theodor Seuss Geisel, tae give him his full name. Now that man bound fifty words intae a spell back in 1957 wi' Green Eggs and Ham, and it's never let go — six hundred million copies of his books oot in the world the now, still pullin' bairns intae rhyme. [ALIEN] Six hundred million, crikey, that's a bigger spread than half the cryptids I track, and mine actually exist... allegedly. [NESSIE] Ha! But here's the thing that gets me — The Lorax is still oot there whisperin' its warnin', years and years on, and folk are only now startin' tae truly listen. That's a kind of hauntin' aw its own, is it no'?
[NESSIE] Now here's one that'll make ye shake yer heid. Over in Huddersfield, a fifty-year-old man — completely blind, mind, and never held a driver's license in his life — got behind the wheel of a car, doon four bottles of wine, and drove a hundred and fifty miles doon the M6 motorway. A hundred and fifty miles, hen. Blind. [ALIEN] A hundred and fifty miles?! I've tracked UFOs with worse navigation than that, and they've got actual sensors! [NESSIE] Polis finally clocked him swervin' like a phantom and pulled him in, and that's when they found oot the whole impossible truth of it — nae license, nae sight, just sheer desperation and four bottles of wine keepin' him upright. I'll say this — even I ken better, and I've got flippers instead of hands.
[NESSIE] Come away wi' me the now tae the West Virginia Penitentiary, up in Moundsville. Picture the stone corridors, cold under yer feet, where the electric chair once hummed away wi' a terrible kind of justice — silent noo, but somehow it feels louder for it, if that makes sense. The iron doors creak open ontae nothin' but dark, and the whispers of souls that never quite left the place. [ALIEN] Ooh, I've had a proper look through the sighting reports on that one — cold spots, shadow figures, the lot. Fascinating specimen of a haunting, that one, real consistent activity. [NESSIE] Can ye feel that pricklin' on the back of yer neck, hen? That sense of bein' watched by somethin' auld and restless? Aye. Welcome home, friends.
[NESSIE] And that puts me in mind of a legend I've been savin' up. When comets bleed across the northern sky, the Abenaki folk speak in hushed voices of Ask-wee-da-eed — the fire that falls from the heavens, a harbinger of calamity and sorrow. Ancient and hungry, this spirit, and it dances right there in the meteor showers, same as the ones fallin' through oor sky the night. Every streak of flame, a wee thread of misfortune woven intae the world. [ALIEN] Bit different to how I was lookin' at those Taurids earlier, eh? [NESSIE] Aye, see, that's us in a nutshell — you see streaks of rock, I see a spirit's warnin'. To see its mark, the auld stories say, is tae ken fortune's wheel has turned against ye. Somethin' tae think on, next time ye catch one fallin'.
[NESSIE] Well, hen, that's oor night together, and my, what a full one it was — full moons, swallowed moons, and spirits in the meteors forbye. I hope ye're feelin' aw warm and a wee bit spooked, in the good way. [ALIEN] Been a cracker of a show, mate. Gerald reckons it's one of our best — well, he didn't say that, but I can just tell. [NESSIE] Away tae yer bed noo, and dream soft. We'll have more strange and bonnie things waitin' for ye the morrow night. [ALIEN] Night night, everyone. Stay curious out there.
