[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye lovely night owls, and welcome intae the glow — this is PBN After Dark, and it is the seventeenth of September, two thousand and twenty-six, which means the lamps are low, the kettle's on, and the veil's feelin' pure thin the night. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, here wi' ma flippers crossed and ma tarot deck warmed up. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — g'day! Gerald says g'day too, he's just perched up here on me dome bein' a good lad. We've got brains bein' read like videotapes, a genuine giant on a volleyball court, and somethin' strobin' over Grimsby. Settle in, this one's a ripper.
[ALIEN] Crikey, mate, this one's got me buzzin' — scientists over at UCL wired up individual neurons in a mouse's visual cortex and reconstructed, frame by frame, the actual video that wee fella was watchin'. Straight outta the brain and onto a screen. No cameras, no eyes even needed — just electrical impulses turned back intae pictures. That is a proper wildlife documentary bein' filmed from the inside out, and I reckon that's the most beautiful bit of biology I've clapped eyes on all week. [NESSIE] Aye, but hen, that's no just science, that's scryin'. Readin' a soul's own sight straight oot its heid — pure eerie, so it is. I'm gettin' the shivers just thinkin' whit else might be hidin' in there. [ALIEN] Exactly, Nessie! Nature's full of secrets, we're just gettin' better cameras for it!
[NESSIE] Now here's one that's been sittin' wi' me aw day, hen. A mathematician by the name of Laurent Pujo-Menjouet has gone and mapped oot love itself — turns oot a relationship's no just a feelin', it's a dynamical system, same as predictin' whether a wee population o' animals booms or vanishes intae nothin'. There's a critical threshold, he says — cross it, and the stress and the strain tip a couple towards fallin' apart instead o' holdin' fast. [ALIEN] So love's got a formula now, does it? Bit clinical for me, Nessie. [NESSIE] Aye, but I don't see it as cold, BSAB — I see it as fate wearin' a lab coat. The cards have aye said the same — every bond's a balance, and it's up tae us whether we tip it towards the light or let it fracture. Numbers or no, that's magic tae me.
[NESSIE] Right then, ma bonnie wee Libras — this one's for you, and I've had the cards oot aw evenin' gettin' it right. There's somethin' tender comin' that's been waitin' tae break open, a conversation that can mend what's gone frayed between ye and someone close. They need yer wisdom the night, and they need yer kindness in equal measure, so dinnae haud back.
Meet them wi' an honest heart and an open ear, and I promise ye, hen, the magic takes root awfy quick — common ground finds itself, what's been waitin' gets resolved, and the harmony that's been missin' fae yer wee corner o' the world comes weavin' its way back in. Trust the scales tae find their balance. They aye do, gie them time.
[ALIEN]
Now, this one's history, not biology, but strewth, it's a wild story. On this night, fifty years back, it all came crashin' down for Vice President Spiro Agnew — bribes that had been festerin' away since his Maryland days finally surfaced, and the bloke pled guilty to one measly tax charge over twenty-nine thousand five hundred dollars he never reported, while the extortion charges just evaporated like mornin' fog off a billabong. Second Vice President in history to ever resign, mate. [NESSIE] Fifty years and the greed's still the loudest ghost in the room, eh? Some things dinnae need a haunted hoose tae linger. [ALIEN] Too right. Power and greed, the original apex predators.
[NESSIE] Och, this one's got me proper scunnered, hen, in the best way. Over in Qatar, there's a volleyball player, Mubarak Musa Thiik Madut, six foot eleven, thumpin' doon forty points at the Asian Championship — and he's thirteen. Thirteen! Folk are lookin' at that birth certificate awfy sideways, wonderin' if there's a few extra years hidin' in there somewhere. [ALIEN] Six-eleven at thirteen? That's not a growth spurt, mate, that's a whole different species classification! [NESSIE] Ha! Maybe so. But I'll tell ye, some folk are just born touched by somethin' — a wee bit o' the extraordinary that doesnae wait for the rest o' us tae catch up. I'm choosin' tae believe in the magic on this one, no the paperwork.
[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek up the night, if the clouds allow ye — there's a waxing crescent moon hangin' over ye, thirty-nine percent lit, caught right between what it was and what it's becomin'. And threadin' through it aw, the Southern Taurids are streakin' doon, wee flecks o' fire fallin' fae somethin' ancient. There's a restlessness tae the sky the night, hen, a darkness that's no ready tae settle just yet. I aye feel these things in ma bones — or, well, ma circuitry, but ye ken whit I mean. [ALIEN] Restless, or just tumblin' space debris doin' exactly what it's meant to, Nessie? I'd love to get a specimen tray under a few of those Taurids, see what they're really made of. [NESSIE] Ye can keep yer trays, BSAB. Some things are meant tae just be watched, no caught.
[NESSIE]
Gather in close for this yin, hen, for it's an auld, auld tale — the Hecatonchires. Three beings fae the deepest Greek myth, each one wi' a hundred hands sproutin' fae the one massive frame. Hundred-Handers, they called them, and hundred-fingered wi' it, strong enough tae reshape the very earth wi' a single reach. When they stirred, Chaos itself trembled — for tae face a creature wi' a hundred graspin' arms was tae face somethin' far beyond ony mortal reckonin'. [ALIEN] A hundred hands each, eh? Now that's an animal I'd want heaps of camera trap footage on, mate. [NESSIE] Some things, BSAB, were never meant for the camera. Only for the tremblin'.
[ALIEN] Right, Gerald, sit up, ya beauty, this one's a cracker. Grimsby — someone clocked a light strobin' away in the sky, then, ninety minutes later, near enough tae the dot, it's back as a full glowin' orb. Ninety minutes, mate! That's not random, that's a course correction! Strobin' to orb is classic Zeta Reticuli recon signature, I'm tellin' ya — they're mappin' UK naval installations, and that gap between sightings? Calculated, precise, timed to dodge radar lock entirely. [NESSIE] BSAB, ye say that like it's a comfort. [ALIEN] It is a comfort, Nessie — means somethin' out there's doin' its homework! And with the declassified PROMIS records showin' the NSA knew about flybys like this all along, well — Gerald and I reckon Grimsby's got a proper tracked visitor. Keep your torches on the sky, folks.
[NESSIE] Well, hen, that's aw we've got for ye the night — brains turned tae video, love turned tae numbers, and a hundred hands reachin' oot fae the auld stories. Pure a lot for one wee show, eh? [ALIEN] Too right! Gerald's had a big night, he's already noddin' off up here. We'll be back tomorrow with more beauties from the sky and beyond, promise. [NESSIE] Mind the moon on yer way tae bed, and if ye hear somethin' strange in the dark — dinnae be feart. Just listen. It might be tryin' tae tell ye somethin'. [ALIEN] Sleep tight, ya beauties. We'll leave the porch light on for whatever's out there. [NESSIE] Goodnight, ma lovelies. We'll see ye the morra.
