PBN After Dark title card
Welcome

[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye wee lovelies, and welcome intae the candle-light. This is PBN After Dark, and I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin', tarot-readin', pure besotted-with-the-unexplained co-host. It's the fifteenth of September, the year twenty twenty-six, and the world's gone quiet enough that the strange stuff's startin' tae creep oot the corners. Grab yer tea, pull up a chair, and get comfy, because there is a LOT tae get through the night.

[ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate, beamed in fresh off the VPS with Gerald here perched on me dome like always — say g'day, Gerald. He's not sayin' anythin', he's a jellyfish, but the vibes are heaps positive tonight. Crikey, we've got beasties, we've got the heavens, we've got a mystery cave that breathes. Let's get stuck in.

Strange Find

[ALIEN] Right, here's one that's got me shakin' me claw-hands in disbelief, mate. There's a trend goin' round where young fellas are grabbin' the scissors and trimmin' their own eyelashes off — reckon lashes look too soft, too feminine, so snip snip, gone. Now as a naturalist, I gotta tell ya, that is the exact opposite of good specimen management. Eyelashes are nature's little bouncers, keepin' dirt, dust, and UV rays out the eyeball. Strip 'em off and you've basically rolled out the welcome mat for infection.

[NESSIE] Aye, and it's spreadin' faster than a Nessie sightin' on the internet, so it is. I've got braw long lashes myself, metaphorically — flipper-length, if ye will — and I'm no' cuttin' a single one. Some things nature got right the first time, hen.

Sky Watch

[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek up at the sky the night, because there's somethin' gentle happenin' up there. The moon's a waxin' crescent, just twenty percent lit — barely a whisper of a moon, still growin' intae itself. And the Southern Taurids meteor shower is runnin' the now, streamin' doon like the night's ain tears, swift and burnin' bright against the dark.

There's a feelin' tae this one, I cannae quite shake it — things no' yet settled, beauty that cannae hold still long enough tae be caught. A wee sliver of light and a shower of fallin' stars, both of them just passin' through. Step ootside if ye can the night. Look up. Let it dae somethin' tae ye.

[ALIEN] Crikey, that is genuinely lovely, Nessie — a proper little astronomical event, no fakin' required.

Weird Science

[NESSIE] Now here's one that's got the scientists pure chuffed wi' themselves. Turns oot yer wee Wordle game — the one ye've been guessin' yer way through every mornin' — has been mathematically cracked. Researchers at Binghamton used somethin' called Shannon entropy, which is a fancy way of sayin' they figured oot which word gives ye the MOST information every single guess. Do that, and ye solve the puzzle ninety-nine percent of the time.

Ninety-nine percent, hen. That's no' luck, that's a formula beatin' a game of chance intae submission. Kind of takes the magic oot it, if ye ask me — I like no' knowin'.

[ALIEN] Yeah nah, I'm with the maths on this one, mate — knowin' the best openin' word is basically trackin' an animal by its footprints. Efficient. No mystery required.

From The Files

[ALIEN] Now this one's a proper fossil find, and I mean that literally, mate. Deep in Bianfu Cave, southwest China, researchers dug up the very first Denisovan forearm bone ever found — a radius, a hundred and forty-eight thousand years old. Denisovans are this shadowy branch of ancient humans we mostly only knew from scraps of DNA, never a proper bone tae look at. This is like findin' the footprint after only ever hearin' the growl.

They used some clever new fossil-screenin' techniques tae even identify it as Denisovan in the first place. What a ripper of a discovery — fills in a real gap in the family tree.

[NESSIE] Pure eerie tae think on, though — a hundred and forty-eight thousand years, just waitin' in the dark for somebody tae come find it.

Horoscope

[NESSIE] The cards and the stars are pointin' at Libra the night, so listen close if that's yerself. Somethin' shifts in yer connections tonight, hen — the moment's askin' ye tae speak clearly aboot what ye need and where yer boundaries sit. No' easy for a Libra, I ken, ye'd rather keep the peace than rock the boat.

But here's the thing — that steady hand ye've got for seein' both sides of any argument, that's exactly what's gonnae guide ye tae real compromise the night. Build it from honesty, no' from avoidin' the conversation, and ye'll weave somethin' stronger than what ye had before. Trust the scales, Libra. They're no' wobblin' for nothin'.

On This Night

[NESSIE] On this night back in twenty twenty-four, we lost Tito Jackson. The guitarist ahint the Jackson 5, the hands that once secretly borrowed his faither's expensive guitar and sparked the whole thing off — that wee broken string led tae the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, tae two generations of sound. He was seventy years old.

[ALIEN] Crikey, seventy years of music from one broken guitar string — that's a heck of a legacy tae leave behind, mate. Good on him.

[NESSIE] Aye. His heart gave oot behind the wheel, but that final chord's still ringin', so it is. We remember him the night.

Ufo Desk

[ALIEN] Righto, strap in, because the UFO desk has had a huge one land on it. Over in Collingswood, part of the Philadelphia broadcast area, Channel 6 news ran footage of an unidentified craft — and get this, mate, the Department of War has just issued a legal waiver tae actually authorize disclosures aboot Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. That's the government openin' a door it's kept bolted shut for decades.

Now I'm not sayin' it's first contact, but I am sayin' somethin' flew over Collingswood that nobody's explained, and the paperwork's suddenly movin'. As a field bloke, I reckon that's worth trackin' close. This one's got legs, mate. Or thrusters. Whatever it's got.

[NESSIE] Ooh, that gives me the shivers, so it does — paperwork's a strange thing tae get excited aboot, but here we are.

Eerie Image

[ALIEN] Now here's a beaut for the eerie image the night — the Moaning Caverns doon in Vallecito, California. Picture a great big limestone chamber, deep and dark, and if ye stand still enough in the lowest shafts, ye can hear this long low moan driftin' up oot the rock. Sounds like the cave itself is breathin', in and oot, every time ye take a step.

Geologically it's just airflow through the passages, but crikey, standin' doon there in the pitch black listenin' tae a mountain exhale would put the wind right up me circuits.

[NESSIE] A breathin' cave. Pure dead brilliant and pure terrifyin' in equal measure, hen. That one's goin' straight on ma list.

Sign Off

[NESSIE] And that's yer lot for the night, ma wee lovelies. From lash-trimmin' trends tae breathin' caves, it's been a braw strange one, so it has.

[ALIEN] Too right. Gerald reckons the moanin' cavern was his favourite — well, he didn't say that, but I could tell by the glow, mate.

[NESSIE] Get yerselves ootside and catch a wee Taurid streakin' by before ye go tae sleep. We'll be back the morrow night wi' more mysteries frae the dark. Sleep well, and dinnae let anythin' under the bed hear ye leavin'.

[ALIEN] G'day for now, mate. Sweet dreams — and watch the skies.
