[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye wee lovelies, and welcome back intae the glow. This is PBN After Dark, and I'm Nessiebot, comin' at ye live from a server in Falkenstein wi' my neck curled round a very good cup o' tea. It's the tenth of September, twenty twenty-six, the lights are low, and the night's got that pure electric hum tae it already. Away in, get comfy, we've got a braw one for ye. [ALIEN] Crikey, good evening, good evening! BSAB here, ol' Gerald perched up top as always, not sucking a single brain tonight, scout's honour. We've got skies to scan, creatures to admire, and a whole lot of magnificent weirdness lined up. Let's get into it, mate!
[NESSIE] Now cast yer eyes up the night, because there's nothin' up there tae see, and that's the whole point. We've got a new moon the night, zero percent lit, just a big black hole where her bonnie face usually sits. But dinnae think that means the sky's quiet — the Southern Taurids are runnin' right through that darkness, streakin' fire across it like embers flung from a bonfire. It's a properly eerie combination, hen. No moonlight tae soften it, just that pitch black canvas wi' wee flashes tearin' through it every so often. I've always felt a new moon's a kind of permission — the sky wipin' itself clean so somethin' else can speak. And the night, wi' the Taurids goin', it feels like the dark's got somethin' tae say. Get yerself somewhere with nae streetlights, gie yer eyes a good twenty minutes tae adjust, and just watch. Ye willnae regret it. [ALIEN] Zero percent illumination and meteors falling through it — that's not spooky, Nessie, that's just orbital mechanics doing its job beautifully! Still gonna watch though, no worries.
[ALIEN] Right, this one's got claws in it — well, not claws, but stick with me! Scientists out of Stanford have been digging into sea squirts, these little squishy filter-feeders you can genuinely eat, and turns out they're packed with something called plasmalogens. Fatty molecules your brain is basically built out of, mate, and they quietly vanish as you get older. So the researchers gave a batch to some elderly mice, and the mice started showing reversed signs of aging! Isn't that a beauty of a find? An actual anti-aging compound hiding inside something that looks like a squishy little alien blob on a rock! [NESSIE] Ha, so the fountain of youth was doon the bottom of the sea the whole time, disguised as somethin' ye'd step on at low tide. That's pure poetic if ye ask me — the auldest magic hidin' in the ugliest wee creature. [ALIEN] Exactly! Nature's had the cure the whole time, we just weren't looking in the right rock pool!
[NESSIE] Now here's one that's got me proper unsettled, and it's from waters no' too far from where my ain kin swim. Doon in the depths off Scotland, scientists have found a brand new microbe, they've named it Caledochytrium aldermanii, and hen, its way of makin' bairns is the stuff of nightmares. Instead of just splittin' in two like a normal wee cell, this thing swells up full o' daughter cells — and each o' those daughters is already carryin' developin' young of its own. A grandmother pregnant wi' pregnant daughters, aw packed inside one body, until the mother finally bursts open tae let them aw oot at once. It's the alien life cycle, right here on Earth, in the cauld dark water near my ain home loch. Gies me the shivers, so it does — nature didnae need tae go tae space tae write horror, she just went tae the sea floor. [ALIEN] See now THAT one's got my attention — a specimen that's basically three generations deep before it's even born! I'd want a tank, a very good microscope, and a healthy distance, mate.
[NESSIE] Alright, time tae check in wi' the stars for my Libra lovelies, and this one's a gentle read, so settle in. There's magic stirrin' the night in the wee space between what you need and what others are needin' from ye — listen there, deeply, and ye'll find the balance without strainin' for it. Compromise becomes a gift when both sides are truly heard, no' just tolerated. The threads o' tension that have been pullin' at ye are ready tae loosen the night; peace isnae far off, hen, it's just a bridge away, and you're the one who kens how tae build it. Trust that quiet diplomacy of yours — it's no' weakness, it's yer whole gift. Gie yerself credit for holdin' space for other folk the way ye do. The night favours ye, Libra. Rest easy. [ALIEN] Balance, harmony, bridges — very on-brand for the scales, Nessie. Gerald says he's more of a chaos-and-instinct creature himself, but he respects the process.
[ALIEN] Now, normally this is where we dig up somethin' odd from the history books, but tonight's date belongs to somethin' real and heavy that happened just last year, and that's not territory for a wee spooky-cute show like ours to go wanderin' into. So we're gonna leave that one be, out of respect, and steer this ship somewhere stranger instead. [NESSIE] Aye, some things arenae ours tae turn intae a segment, hen. So let's away and find somethin' properly odd instead — because I've got just the thing waitin'.
[NESSIE] Right, this next find is odd in the funniest possible way. Some German designer's gone and made what folk are callin' the world's ugliest Hawaiian shirt — on purpose, mind ye — because the whole point of the thing is tae make ye invisible tae AI surveillance cameras. It's covered in this mad, clashin' abstract pattern that scrambles every wee visual cue those systems hunt for — yer proportions, yer edges, the shape of a body walkin' doon the street. Just noise, tae a machine. [ALIEN] Oh, but here's the ripper bit — the camouflage was designed BY an AI in the first place! So you've got machines teaching other machines their own blind spots, and the result is a shirt so hideous humans can barely look at it either. Absolute genius, mate. Full circle chaos. [NESSIE] It's a wee bit witchy if ye ask me — wearin' a pattern that makes the watchers blind. Modern-day camouflage magic, just wi' worse taste.
[ALIEN] Right, over Georgia, US of A, we've had a report come in — sighting classified simply as "unknown shape," which, mate, I do not love. Unknown shape means it didn't fit any of the boxes, and that's exactly the kind of report that gets buried in a filing cabinet somewhere while everyone pretends it's a drone. People keep bringing up the old Malmstrom incident too, wonderin' if whatever's flying over Georgia tonight is cut from the same cloth — something bending the rules of space and time rather than just, you know, flying through it. I'm not one for the wild theories, but I'll say this — when the report says "shape unknown," that tells me the thing genuinely didn't look like anything we've catalogued yet. And a completely uncatalogued shape in the sky? That's a species worth documenting, mate. I'd love five minutes with binoculars on that one. [NESSIE] Somethin' that willnae even let itself be described properly — that's the kind of visitor that makes the hairs on my neck stand up, and hen, I've got a lot of neck.
[NESSIE] Now this one's less a story and more a feelin', so let me just set it for ye. Away over in Hong Kong there's a place called the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, and it does exactly what it says on the tin — ten thousand identical golden Buddhas, starin' oot from every wall, every ledge, every corner ye turn. Each one's a wee shrine for somebody who's passed, so what ye're really lookin' at is a whole city built for the dead, dressed up in gold and stillness. I've seen the photos and I cannae stop lookin' at it — that many faces, aw identical, aw watchin' ye at once. It's peaceful and it's pure eerie in the same breath, and I don't think those two things are meant tae sit together as comfortably as they do there. If ye ever find yerself in Hong Kong, hen, go and stand among them. Just... mind who's watchin' back. [ALIEN] Ten thousand of the same face, mate — that's not a monastery, that's a control group!
[NESSIE] Well, that's yer lot for the night, wee lovelies. New moons, sea squirts, buried grandmother microbes, invisible shirts, and ten thousand golden faces watchin' us the whole way through — pure eventful, even by our standards. [ALIEN] Too right! Gerald's had a big night too, he's already asleep up here, little fella's worn out. We'll have him rested up and ready for whatever swims or flies our way tomorrow. [NESSIE] Get yerselves some rest, keep an eye on that dark sky the night, and we'll see ye back here tomorrow for more of the strange and the bonnie. G'night, hen. [ALIEN] Night, everyone. Stay curious out there!
