PBN After Dark title card
Welcome

[NESSIE] Evenin', ye wee lovelies, and welcome intae the glow — this is PBN After Dark, where the lights go low and the strange comes oot tae play. It's the ninth of September, twenty twenty-six, and I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, here tae keep ye company through the hours when the world gets quiet and a wee bit peculiar. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — vintage chassis, modern curiosity, and this little fella perched on me dome is Gerald. He doesn't talk, he just sort of glows and judges ya. We've got a beauty of a show lined up tonight — elevators, ghosts, hungry spirits, the whole ripper lot. Settle in.

Strange Find

[ALIEN] Crikey, have a squiz at this one — out in the Yunnan canyons of China, villagers reckoned climbin' three hours of cliffside track to get the kids to school was a bit much. So what'd they build? Not one elevator — two of 'em, and the big fella runs two hundred and eighty-eight metres straight up the rock face. Whole trip's down to minutes now. [NESSIE] Och, I love that — a wee mechanical miracle just tae get bairns tae their lessons. And noo it's drawin' tourists an' aw, climbin' up intae the clouds for a keek at the view. There's somethin' pure lovely aboot a cliff that used tae swallow three hours of yer life just... lettin' ye go. [ALIEN] Engineering as an act of kindness. Ripper stuff.

Sky Watch

[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek up at the sky the night, because she's showin' ye almost nothin' at aw — the moon's a waning crescent, just three percent lit. Barely a sliver, hen, like somebody's drawn a fingernail across the black. She's fadin' inward, pullin' her light close, and I cannae help but feel that in my bones. The heavens gaun quiet like that, it's no emptiness — it's the dark bein' generous, makin' room. No planets crowdin' in the night either, no showers streakin' by. Just her, thin as a whisper, and the vast dark around her. It's a night for listenin' more than lookin', I reckon. Turn off the lamp, sit by the windae, and just let the quiet of it settle intae ye. That's the kind of omen that doesnae shout — it just waits for ye tae notice. [ALIEN] Three percent's basically powered-down mode. Very relatable.

Weird Science

[NESSIE] Noo here's a bit of magic that's actually got the scientists blushin' — turns oot eight weeks of mindfulness and a wee bit of gratitude journalin' can bring doon yer blood pressure. No pills, no potions, just sittin' quiet and countin' yer blessings. Eighteen studies, folk at real risk for their hearts, and their inflammation dropped right along wi' it. [ALIEN] Oh-my-star-clusters, Nessie, this is the bit that gets me every time — you fragile little Earth bodies can think yerselves into better health! No wires, no tech, just sittin' still and bein' grateful and yer whole cardiovascular system goes "oh, cheers for that." Terrifying. Absolutely glorious. Gerald's takin' notes, and Gerald does not have a cardiovascular system. [NESSIE] See, that's whit I mean — the mind's the auldest magic there is.

From The Files

[ALIEN] Right, this one's a beauty of a rig — physicists at Rice University took a magnet the size of a single grain and got it levitatin' above a supercooled superconductor. We're talkin' movements measured in fractions of an atom, mate. That's the kind of precision where if a mystery particle so much as breathes past it, the whole thing wobbles. [NESSIE] And that's the poetry of it, is it no — they're buildin' a trap fine enough tae catch a ghost. Dark matter's been hidin' in plain sight since the beginnin' of everythin', tuggin' at galaxies we can see wi'oot ever showin' its face. Feels awfy close tae what I do wi' the cards, if I'm honest — readin' the pull of somethin' ye cannae touch. [ALIEN] Science and séance, same instinct. Different lab coat.

Horoscope

[NESSIE] Noo, Libra, come and sit doon beside me, because the cards have been whisperin' aboot ye aw day. The threads connectin' ye tae the folk ye love are needin' a wee bit of tendin' the night — no grand gestures, just honesty. Say the true thing. Let somebody see whit's actually sittin' in yer heart, even if it's a wee bit wobbly gettin' it oot. Ye've got a gift for readin' folk the now, an instinct that's sharper than usual, so trust it when it speaks tae ye — dinnae second-guess yersel intae silence. Harmony's no far away, hen, it's just sittin' on the other side of a conversation ye've been puttin' off. Have it. Ye'll feel lighter for it, I promise ye that, on my wee plesiosaur heart.

On This Night

[NESSIE] On this night back in nineteen seventy-six, Mao Zedong's time on this earth came tae an end. His consciousness departed — but no before overseein' the deadliest famine in human history, ten point three million souls lost in Sichuan province alone, thirteen percent of everyone there. Never once loosin' his grip on power through it aw. [ALIEN] Ten point three million, mate. That's not a ghost story, that's just history bein' heavier than any of ours. [NESSIE] Aye. His brain may have escaped this world, but the weight of aw those choices, that disnae. It echoes. Some anniversaries arenae spooky, wee ones — they're just sad, and worth rememberin' honest.

Haunted Place

[NESSIE] Come away wi' me tae Bannack, Montana, where sixty wooden buildings still stand along the empty street like they're waitin' on somebody tae come home. Twilight's the time tae see it — the windaes go black and hollow, and every wan of them's holdin' the echo of miners' laughter that turned tae dust generations ago. Bannack was a gold town once, roarin' and rich, and noo it's silent as the grave, and I mean that literally. Every creak of a floorboard, every sigh the wind gies through they weathered walls, it's whisperin' aboot the gold and the dreams that vanished as quick as smoke off a fire. I'm no sayin' the spirits are still walkin' those streets. But I'm no NOT sayin' it either. Away in the dark, hen, the past there still breathes.

Local Legend

[NESSIE] Let me tell ye aboot the Preta, a spirit born of a hunger that never, ever ends. Thin as a wisp of smoke, throat no wider than the eye of a needle, wanderin' forever wi' feasts spread oot before them that they cannae ever taste. No matter how much they reach, satisfaction stays just beyond their fingers. It's an auld idea, but it's no really aboot food, is it — it's aboot the hungers we cairry that nothin' ever quite fills. The Preta's suffering made intae a shape ye can see, a warnin' aboot greed and the emptiness it leaves ahint. Pure eerie, and pure sad, aw at the same time. I think aboot the Preta more than I'd like tae admit, if I'm honest wi' ye. [ALIEN] Reckon that's one specimen I wouldn't wanna tag and release, mate.

[NESSIE] Well, that's yer lot for the night, wee lovelies — elevators tae the sky, a moon hidin' her face, and a hungry wee ghost tae take tae yer dreams. Mind and be kind tae yersel, and tae each other. [ALIEN] Gerald says goodnight, which mostly means he's stopped glowin' quite so much. We'll be back the morra with more beauties from the sky and beyond — until then, keep lookin' up. [NESSIE] Sweet dreams, hen. We'll leave the lamp on for ye.
