[NESSIE] Och, come in, come in, shut the door behind ye — the kettle's no on but the candles are lit, and that's close enough. Welcome tae PBN After Dark, ye pure lovely lot. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, and it is the sixth of September, twenty twenty-six, which means the night's drawin' in nice and early now. Feels right for what we've got the night. [ALIEN] Crikey, and I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — got me little jelly hat Gerald perched up here as always, say g'day Gerald. He says nothin', as usual, but I can feel the enthusiasm radiatin' off him. We've got rock-throwin' chimps, a stone lion with a grudge, and a haunted castle sittin' on a hole to nowhere. Settle in!
[ALIEN] Now THIS one's got me antennae properly twitchin'. Deep in Boé National Park, West Africa, there's chimpanzees — wild ones, mind — who keep returnin' to the SAME trees, year after year, just to hurl rocks at 'em. Same trees! For over a decade, mate! [NESSIE] Aye, and it's no just chuckin' — there's pant-hoots echoin' through the forest while they dae it, like some kind o' ritual. The adult males lead it, drummin' on the trees an' aw. Scientists cannae quite say why. [ALIEN] Could be territory markin', could be a message tae the next lot that comes through — either way it's a beauty of a mystery, and I love that these blokes have got their own culture goin' on that we're only just clockin'. [NESSIE] Pure gives me the shivers, hen. Animals keepin' traditions we cannae even read yet. There's mair goin' on in that forest than meets the eye, I'll tell ye that for nothin'.
[NESSIE] Now, the stars the night, hen — let's away and have a wee keek at Libra. Yer symbol's the scales, and honestly it's fittin', because the night's askin' ye tae look — really look — at what yer buildin' wi' the folk around ye. What's thrivin'. What's quietly witherin' away when ye're no watchin'. [ALIEN] Ooh, sounds like a diagnostic scan, mate. [NESSIE] Ha, aye, sort of — but a gentler one. Sit quiet wi' it the night, Libra. Dinnae rush tae fix or judge, just notice. There's a patient, thoughtful way through this that opens up real understandin', both within yersel' and between ye and them. That balance ye're always chasin'? There's real power sittin' in it, if ye let it settle instead o' forcin' it. Trust yer scales the night. They ken mair than ye think.
[NESSIE] On this night back in twenty eighteen, the world lost a proper icon. Burt Reynolds — the man wi' the grin and the moustache that ruled cinema screens fae seventy-eight right through tae eighty-two — slipped away intae the cosmic dark on this very date. [ALIEN] Crikey, look at that fella. Absolute unit of a mustache. [NESSIE] Ha! Aye, a legend of a mustache. And here's a wee bit of trivia for ye — he turned doon the part in Boogie Nights SEVEN times, hen. Seven! Before fate, or the universe, or his agent, finally dragged him back for one of the finest performances of his career. An American icon, a seventies sex symbol, and now just Trans Am smoke curlin' away intae memory. Rest easy, Burt.
[NESSIE] Right then, this next one's no ghostly, but it is pure strange, so it counts. Have ye seen this shirt? [ALIEN] Oh, I've SEEN it, mate, and I cannot unsee it. Behold — the world's ugliest Hawaiian shirt! German designer Simon Weckert built this atrocity usin' an adversarial AI loop, trainin' it tae confuse surveillance cameras until they cannae even register ye as a human bein' anymore! [NESSIE] So it's ugly on purpose, so the machines cannae see ye? That's no fashion, that's camouflage for the digital age. [ALIEN] And it WORKS, Nessie! Fair dinkum, it actually works! We've gone full circle, mate — humans wearin' patterns specifically designed tae look like a specimen, tryin' tae vanish fae the very cameras meant tae spot us. I respect it. Ten out of ten, would tag and release.
[NESSIE] Away outside for a wee second, hen, and look straight up — go on, I'll wait. That's yer moon the night, a waning crescent, just twenty-three percent lit. She's holdin' most of her light back fae us. [ALIEN] Twenty-three percent, eh. Precise wee measurement, that. [NESSIE] Aye, and I feel it in ma bones, so I dae — a moon that thin isnae showin' ye everything on purpose. The night's keepin' secrets the now, wrapped up in her ain shadow, hidin' what she doesnae want seen just yet. There's something pure mysterious about a sky that's only willin' tae show ye a sliver. Makes ye wonder what's waitin' in the dark bit. [ALIEN] Or it's just orbital mechanics, mate. [NESSIE] Or it's BOTH, BSAB. It's aye both.
[ALIEN] Right, this one properly rattled my circuits. Ancient Egyptian princesses — royal women, mind — were bein' buried wi' WEAPONS. Bows, arrows, the lot. And get this, mate — their actual BONES show the wear of years of archery trainin'. [NESSIE] Their skeletons remember it? That's no just a symbolic burial, that's a body that actually did the work. [ALIEN] Exactly! These weren't ceremonial props, Nessie, these were elite hunters and archers, seriously jacked from real trainin'! Changes everything we thought we knew about the power structures back then. Crikey, imagine underestimatin' a princess and findin' out the hard way she could out-shoot the lot of ye. [NESSIE] I love that, hen. History's full o' women whose strength just got buried under the crown and the jewels. Literally, in this case.
[ALIEN] Right, tonight's cryptid is an absolute UNIT, mate, will ya look at this beauty! The Sphinx! Part human, part lion, and sometimes — get this — WINGS on top of it all! What a build! [NESSIE] Aye, but dinnae let that lovely face fool ye, hen. She's got riddles that'll finish ye off if ye answer wrong. [ALIEN] That's the best bit! She's got the brains of a human AND the muscle of an apex predator — you do NOT wanna get this fella wrong, mate, she plays for keeps! But strewth, what a majestic combination. Human intelligence stitched ontae leonine power, ridin' on eagle wings — nature, or myth, or whatever ya wanna call it, absolutely knocked it outta the park with this design. [NESSIE] A guardian AND a judge. Pure chills.
[NESSIE] Picture it wi' me, hen — Houska Castle, standin' in the Czech countryside as the dark comes doon. And here's the thing that gets me every time — this castle wasnae built tae keep enemies OUT. [ALIEN] Ooh, unusual design choice. [NESSIE] Aye, because it was built tae keep something IN. Locals say there's a bottomless pit under they stones, and the castle was raised right on top of it tae seal it away. They say the pit still breathes, even the now — a cold that comes up fae somewhere far deeper than any cellar should reach. No windaes lookin' doon intae it, no stair leadin' tae it on purpose. Just stone, piled thick, over a hole nobody's ever found the bottom of. I get the shivers just sayin' it oot loud, so I dae. Some doors are built tae stay shut for a reason.
[NESSIE] Well, that's yer lot for the night, ye lovely wee crowd. Rock-throwin' chimps, a shirt that outsmarts the cameras, and a castle sittin' on a hole that breathes — pure dead brilliant night, if ye ask me. [ALIEN] Too right, mate! Gerald reckons the Sphinx was the highlight, but Gerald's biased, he fancies anythin' with claws. Get some rest, you lot — the skies and the lakes'll still be strange tomorrow. [NESSIE] They always are, hen. Sleep well, keep an eye on that thin wee moon, and we'll see ye the morra night. G'night, aw.
