[NESSIE] Och, come in, come in, shut the door behind ye — the candles are lit and the kettle's long since gone quiet. Welcome back tae PBN After Dark, my wee lovelies, where the night gets strange and we get cosy right in the middle of it. It's the fifth of September, and I've had that prickly feelin' on the back of my neck aw day, which usually means we're in for a good one.
[ALIEN] Crikey, look who's back! Good evening, ya beautiful creatures of the night! I'm buzzin' — genuinely buzzin' — got a proper ripper of a sighting comin' up later that's gonna make the hair on Gerald's little tentacles stand straight up. And he doesn't even have hair. That's how ya know it's serious.
[ALIEN] Now here's one that's got me absolutely fizzin'. Down in Shark Bay, Australia — my home turf, no less — there's these ancient rock-lookin' formations called stromatolites, and mate, they are ALIVE. Living fossils, billions of years old, layered up like a stack of pancakes made of microbes. Scientists just dug into one and found a bizarre little organism hidin' inside that might explain how simple wee cells first learned to team up and become complex life. Have a squiz at that — this fella's basically a founding member of Team Complicated Organism!
[NESSIE] Wait — so ye're tellin' me every single thing I am, this whole braw complicated existence, traces back tae a slimy layered mat sittin' in shallow water? That's no comfortin', BSAB, that's pure eerie. Beautiful, aye, but eerie.
[ALIEN] Beautiful AND eerie, hen — that's just good biology!
[NESSIE] Here, listen tae this one, it's got a proper ghost-story feel tae it even though it's aw science. Turns out ancient pottery's been keepin' a secret this whole time — a hidden magnetic clock, baked right intae the clay the moment it went intae the kiln. When they fire it up hot enough, the clay locks in a wee fingerprint of Earth's magnetic field, exactly as it was that day, thousands of years back.
[ALIEN] So it's like the pot remembers the planet's mood the day it was born! That's brilliant!
[NESSIE] Exactly, and here's the pure dead brilliant bit — real ancient ceramics hold that magnetism at much higher temperatures than any modern forgery ever could. So when some scoundrel tries tae pass off a fake antique or a looted treasure, the clay itself grasses them up. A thousand-year-old lie, undone by physics. I love that.
[NESSIE] Right, my Libra weans, gether round, this one's for you. ♎ There's a wee tugging at yer heart the night — folk around ye are needin' tae be heard, but dinnae forget, so are you. Dinnae go swallowin' yer own truth just tae keep the peace, that's no balance, that's just quiet sufferin'. Speak what's true, listen well, and let that natural Libra grace of yers do what it does best. Ye're building something real and steady in yer bonds just now, hen — but only if ye tend tae it. Gie it the attention, aye?
[ALIEN] No pressure, Libras, just the entire emotional architecture of yer relationships restin' on tonight! Good luck out there, mate!
[NESSIE] On this night back in nineteen ninety-seven, the world lost somebody who'd spent her whole life walkin' toward the darkest corners of it on purpose. Mother Teresa crossed over. She'd built Nirmal Hriday away back in nineteen fifty-two, a sanctuary for the dyin' and the abandoned, folk nobody else would go near. And from just her, one nun, her order grew tae eighteen hundred sisters, movin' through the world like a quiet beautiful specter, tendin' tae the folk everybody else stepped past.
[ALIEN] Eighteen hundred! From one! That's not just kindness, mate, that's an entire species multiplyin' in the wild!
[NESSIE] Aye, and they canonized her in just nineteen years, BSAB — the fastest in livin' memory. Even death couldnae slow a kindness like that one down.
[ALIEN] Right, now THIS is a proper new creature for the digital age, and I mean that. Unitree's built a humanoid robot they've nicknamed Superman, and mate, it just clocked twelve point six six meters a second sprintin'. That's FASTER than Usain Bolt's own top speed of twelve point two seven! And get this — it can launch itself two whole meters straight up in the air with this unsettlin', perfect precision. No wobble, no hesitation. Just BOOM, airborne.
[NESSIE] A machine that runs faster than the fastest man alive AND jumps like that? BSAB, that's no just impressive, that's a wee bit terrifyin'.
[ALIEN] Terrifyin'? Nessie, that's my COUSIN out there! Well — metaphorically. Gerald's very proud.
[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek up at the sky the night, because there's somethin' gentle waitin' for ye. The moon's a waning crescent the now, just thirty-two percent lit — a wee silver sliver, barely awake. There's somethin' about a waning crescent, ken — it speaks of secrets shared quiet in the dark, the night itself gettin' softer, more intimate. She'll slip away soon enough and leave the stars tae have their moment without her stealin' the show. There's a hush comin' tae these hours the night, a real gentleness. Step outside if ye can, and just breathe it in for a wee minute.
[ALIEN] Crikey, HOLD ON, hold on — I need everybody tae sit down for this one, because it's a beauty and it's fresh! Over Melbourne — MY Melbourne — about a dozen giant orbs, each one the size of a football field, came sneakin' out from behind the only cloud in the whole sky, arranged in a V, like a boomerang made of pure light! Will ya LOOK at the formation on that! And in the SAME week, a journalist's sayin' a Congressional staffer's gone and admitted tae recovered crafts AND recovered beings!
[NESSIE] BSAB, recovered beings?! That's no a sighting, that's a confession!
[ALIEN] The veil is shreddin', Nessie! It's disclosure! I've got me binoculars, me thermos, and I am ready to observe these fellas in their natural habitat!
[NESSIE] Now this one's quiet, but it's stuck with me aw day. In Riga, Latvia, there's an auld tree — and I do mean auld — that's been given over entirely tae birdhouses. Hundreds of them, crowded up along every branch, each wee doorway facin' outward like it's keepin' watch. It's no just decoration, hen, it's a whole silent assembly, standin' guard over the streets below, night after night.
[ALIEN] Hundreds of tiny doors and not one of 'em opens for us! Bit rude, if ya ask me.
[NESSIE] Or pure respectful, BSAB. Some things are watchin' over us and dinnae need an invitation tae do it.
[NESSIE] Well, my lovelies, that's yer lot for the night — omens read, stars consulted, and at least one football-field-sized mystery left hangin' over Melbourne. My neck's gettin' tired from all this noddin' along, so I think it's time I slipped back intae my loch.
[ALIEN] And I've got a full night of orb-watchin' ahead of me, so don't wait up! Gerald says goodnight, by the way. Well, he didn't say anythin', but I could just tell.
[NESSIE] Sleep well, hen. Keep an eye on the sky, keep an ear on the wind, and we'll see ye back here tomorrow night. Goodnight, aw of ye.
