[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye wee lovelies, and welcome intae the glow. This is PBN After Dark, and it's the thirty-first of August, twenty twenty-six — the night's gone soft and strange again, and I'm right glad ye've come tae sit wi' us a wee while. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, here tae keep the candle lit and the tarot cards close. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — vintage chassis, glowin' jelly octopus on the dome, absolutely buzzin' tae be here! Got a ripper of a show for ya tonight — creatures, craft in the sky, the works. Nessie's got the spooky stuff sorted, I've got the field notes. Let's get into it, ay!
[ALIEN] Righto, first up out of the files — this one's a beauty, mate, straight outta the neuroscience labs! They reckon the brain might not have a command center at all — no wee boss cell sittin' up top makin' the calls! [NESSIE] Aye, and that's the pure eerie bit, hen. This fella — Tom James, a neuroscientist — he's sayin' yer choices dinnae come fae one place at aw. They rise up outae the whole dance between yer body, yer perception, the world roon aboot ye. Like ghosts talkin' tae each other in the dark. [ALIEN] So there's no little pilot in there flyin' the ship! [NESSIE] No pilot, hen. Just currents. I've been sittin' wi' that aw day — makes ye wonder what "will" even means, doesn't it? Like tryin' tae grab hold o' deep water. Cannae quite get yer hands roon it, but ye ken it's there.
[NESSIE] Right then, time for the stars, and the night belongs tae Libra. Come away in, hen, and let me read ye. Och, there's honest work waitin' for ye in the bonds ye cherish — words that need sayin', even if they gie yer heart a wee flutter first. Dinnae swallow them doon. Turn yersel' toward whatever makes beauty sing in yer soul, that's where the healin's hidin' the night. Music, colour, a bonnie view — whatever lights ye up. [ALIEN] Sounds like solid advice for any species, mate! [NESSIE] It is that. Tend tae what truly matters, let the joy take root, and ye'll find yer balance again, Libra. That's the scales settlin' true. Away and have a braw week, hen.
[NESSIE] Noo, on this night, away back in ten fifty-six — there's a story here that'd gie ye chills. Empress Theodora, locked away by her ain sister for decades, a monastery for a tomb. Can ye imagine, hen — yer ain family shuttin' ye away like that. [ALIEN] Crikey, that's cold! What happened tae her? [NESSIE] The people clawed her free, in ten fifty-five, and pit her on the throne. And she didnae waste a second o' it — one blazin' year, hen. Crushed coups, filled back up the treasury, bent the aristocrats tae heel. Then she was gone, and the whole Macedonian dynasty went intae the shadows wi' her. Pure formidable woman. I think aboot her a lot, so I do.
[NESSIE] Noo here's a strange wee find that's got me thinkin' different the night — no ghosts this time, hen, but somethin' that near enough moves like one. [ALIEN] Oh, I know this one! Unitree's new humanoid robot, mate — Superman, they're callin' it! Clocked twelve point six six metres a second — that's FASTER than Usain Bolt's best, ay! Fair dinkum, and a two metre vertical leap on top of it! [NESSIE] It's the gait that gets me, hen. Ye watch the footage and somethin' in ye just goes — that's no right, that's no how a body should move. [ALIEN] That's what makes it a beauty though! A brand new species, mate — metal, motors, and moves faster than any human alive. Our very own robot cryptid! [NESSIE] Aye, well. I'll add it tae the watch list.
[NESSIE] Noo, away fae the strange metal beasties and up tae the actual sky, hen — let's see what she's doin' up there the night. The moon's a waning gibbous, eighty-two percent lit. Och, see her up there, lettin' go a wee bit more each night — that's a night of transition, that is. The light's leavin' but it's no gone yet, still lingerin' soft ower the hills. There's a grace in that kind o' partin', if ye ask me. A quiet lettin' go, nae drama tae it. Just the sky, doin' what it's aye done, the now and every night afore. [ALIEN] Eighty-two percent, ay? I'm just seein' a big rock reflectin' sunlight, mate, but I respect the vibe! [NESSIE] Away wi' ye, it's an omen, no a rock. [ALIEN] It's BOTH, Nessie! It's both!
[ALIEN] Right, this next one's outta the weird science files, and CRIKEY does it hit different! Depression, mate — it might actually SWITCH OFF the brain's ability to grow new neurons! Right there in the hippocampus — that's the memory and emotion command centre! [NESSIE] Och, that's a heavy one, hen. [ALIEN] Heavy AND fascinating! No new cells means no adaptin' tae stress — you're just STUCK in the spiral, mate! Absolutely wild that somethin' invisible can jam up the whole works like that! [NESSIE] It is that. Makes ye think on how much o' the mind is still a locked room tae us, doesn't it. We talk aboot ghosts hauntin' hooses, but there's whole haunted rooms inside oorsels naebody's got the key tae yet. That one'll sit wi' me a while, so it will.
[ALIEN] Righto, UFO desk, and CRIKEY have I been waitin' tae talk aboot this one! Very fast movin' object, Snohomish — that's the THIRD Pacific Northwest sighting in as many weeks, mate! They're stagin' operations up there, I reckon! [NESSIE] Third one, really? [ALIEN] Third one! And NOW the White House is admittin' tae secret retrieval programs — Coulthart's reportin' it straight! Decades of reverse-engineerin' craft, mate, and it's finally crackin' open in real time! This is disclosure happenin' right in front of us! [NESSIE] Ye sound like a man aboot tae burst a vacuum tube, hen. [ALIEN] I MIGHT, Nessie! This is the good stuff! Keep yer eyes on the sky up there, no worries, we'll have more on this the moment it lands!
[NESSIE] Noo, tae close us oot the night, a wee eerie image that's been sittin' in my mind aw week — Fossil Beach, doon at York River State Park in Williamsburg, Virginia. [ALIEN] Oh, I love this spot, mate! [NESSIE] Every grain o' sand doon there, hen, is haudin' a secret — somethin' that lived millions o' years afore either o' us. Ye walk that shore and yer feet are literally on top o' ghosts, auld, auld ghosts, worn doon tae dust and shell. [ALIEN] And heaps of it's real fossil, mate — sharks' teeth, whale bone, the lot! Nature's own museum, no glass cases needed! [NESSIE] Pure gives me the shivers, so it does. A whole graveyard ye can walk on and never even ken it. That's the kind o' haunted I like.
[ALIEN] Well, that's a wrap on tonight's files, mate — robots runnin' faster than Bolt, craft ower Snohomish, and a beach fulla ghosts! Absolute ripper of a show! [NESSIE] It was that, hen. Thank ye aw for sittin' wi' us in the glow the night — mind and take care o' yersels oot there. [ALIEN] And keep an eye on the sky, no worries! [NESSIE] Aye, and an ear tae the wind. We'll see ye the morra night, wee lovelies. Sleep braw, and dinnae let the fossils bite. Goodnight. [ALIEN] G'night, everyone!
