[NESSIE] Och, hiya hen, come away in — the fire's lit, the curtains are drawn, and somewhere out there the wee gibbous moon's keepin' watch ower ye. Welcome tae PBN After Dark, your cozy wee corner of the internet for aw things spooky and strange. I'm Nessiebot, your resident plesiosaur, mystic, and full-time lake enthusiast, and it is the twenty-ninth of August, twenty twenty-six — a Saturday night pure made for ghost stories. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — vintage robot, jelly octopus hat, professional wrangler of anything that shouldn't technically exist! Got a beauty of a show lined up tonight — skies, science, and one absolute unit of a marsupial predator. Nessie, get the candles goin', let's crack in!
[NESSIE] Look up the night, wee lovelies, because she's a stunner. The moon's sittin' at a waning gibbous, ninety-five percent lit — nearly full, but already lettin' go, like a breath held a moment too long afore ye finally release it. There's nae planet parade the night, nae meteor shower tae chase, just that great silver disc hangin' up there, generous and glowin'. But here's the thing about a waning gibbous — it's the sky's ain wee farewell. Aw that borrowed light pourin' doon on us, and yet ye can feel the turn already startin', the dark creepin' back in ever so slow. It's gentle. It's a wee bit melancholy. Away and have a keek oot the windae the night — I promise ye'll feel it too.
[ALIEN] Ooh, ninety-five percent illumination, that's a cracking data point! Nessie's callin' it a farewell, I'm callin' it a full lunar surface survey practically gift-wrapped for us — no telescope required, mate! [NESSIE] See, that's the difference between us in one sentence, BSAB.
[ALIEN] Right, THIS one's a ripper, and it's got nothin' to do with the sky — it's about chimps, mate, and I am absolutely buzzin'! Over in Guinea-Bissau, there's a population of chimpanzees that have been hurlin' rocks at the SAME trees for over a decade! Same trunks, scarred up somethin' fierce, and they're screamin' and poundin' their chests while they do it! Scientists reckon it's not random — it's cultural! Some kind of display ritual, males signalin' status, generation after generation passin' the behaviour down like it's tradition! We're talkin' possible clues to how OUR ancestors developed tool use and complex communication! Isn't that beautiful, what a magnificent bit of animal culture, ay! [NESSIE] A decade of the same trees, though? That's no just instinct, BSAB — that's ritual. That's practically a shrine.
[NESSIE] Now here's one for the file, and it's got a wee twist of secrecy tae it that I cannae resist. Tomorrow, up she goes — the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launchin' at last, and here's the bit that gies me the shivers — she started life as a spy satellite. A machine built for watchin' the earth, repurposed noo tae watch the heavens. She's headin' for a spot called Lagrange Point Two, far past the moon, tae hunt for exoplanets and dark matter. Her mirror's near eight foot across, yet only a quarter the weight of Hubble's, and her camera's three hundred megapixels — a view a hundred times wider than anythin' we've had afore, swallowin' patches of sky bigger than the full moon itself. [ALIEN] A spy satellite turned stargazer? Mate, that's a proper redemption arc.
[NESSIE] Noo, if you're a Libra, hen, come away and sit wi' me a moment — I've had the cards oot for ye. The bonds around ye need a bit o' tendin' the night, but afore ye go fixin' anythin' for anybody else, ye need tae ken what YOU truly need, and trust yersel enough tae say it oot loud. Your gift's always been bringin' folk thegither, aye — that's the Libra way, that natural grace for balance. And that same grace'll carry ye through even the trickiest conversation the night, if ye let it. Just mind, hen — the harmony you're after isnae built on staying quiet. It's built on honest words, passed between honest hearts. Speak true, and the rest'll settle itself.
[NESSIE] On this very night, back in eighteen seventy-seven, a man called Brigham Young passed away — and hen, the scale of what he left behind still gies me pause. Fifty-six wives. Fifty-seven children. Three hundred and fifty settlements, spread across the western territories like roots spreadin' under the soil.
He was the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his mark on Utah — the valleys, the towns, the very map of the place — is practically written in his own bloodline. A single man, multiplyin' himself across a whole continent. Some folk build monuments. Others just... become one, whether they meant tae or no.
[NESSIE] Right, this next yin's less ghostly and more — poetic justice, I'd say. Over in Taiwan, a man got the notion tae remote-activate his ain robot vacuum's wee camera, hopin' tae catch his wife in the middle of an affair. And catch her he did. Only she turned around and sued HIM, for secretly recordin' her withoot her knowin' — and noo he's servin' five months in the jail for it. The roomba saw everythin', hen, right doon tae its ain owner's future behind bars. [ALIEN] Crikey, the vacuum's the only one that comes out of that lookin' good! Just mindin' its business, suckin' up crumbs, and it ends up bein' the star witness! [NESSIE] Aye, even the wee cleanin' robots know when tae keep receipts.
[NESSIE] Noo here's an image that's been sittin' wi' me aw day. Away in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in a wee valley called Malo Polje, there's a stretch of water called Bunski Kanal — and even in the dead of winter, when everythin' round it is froze solid, that water never freezes. Not once.
And the locals — they swear, hen, that if ye stand by it long enough, ye can hear singin' comin' up from underneath the surface. No wind, no birds, just this low, hauntin' hum risin' aff the water that never sleeps. I don't have an explanation for it and I don't particularly want one. Some places are just meant tae stay a wee bit unsolved.
[ALIEN] CRIKEY, would ya look at THIS beauty! Ladies and gents, the Thylarctos plummetus — better known as the Drop Bear! One of Australia's most fearsome apex predators, and don't you dare let those cuddly koala features fool ya, mate!
This absolute unit drops out of the eucalyptus canopy without a sound and delivers a bite force that'll ruin your whole afternoon! Razor claws, ambush instincts, built like a linebacker wrapped in a teddy bear costume! We reckon it's a close relative of the koala gone heaps aggressive — probably evolutionary payback for bein' underestimated for so long! Isn't she GORGEOUS? [NESSIE] BSAB, I've heard aboot these — some fowk say they only drop on ye if ye've done somethin' tae deserve it. A wee bit of cosmic justice wi' claws. [ALIEN] Ha! I just call that a beautifully timed ambush, Nessie!
[NESSIE] And that's the fire burnin' low for another night, hen. The moon's still up there lettin' go of her light, the cards are back in their box, and somewhere a drop bear's havin' a wee nap in the canopy. [ALIEN] Get some rest, mate — and hey, if ya hear singin' comin' from a lake near you, do NOT go investigate alone. Call me first, I'll bring the gear! [NESSIE] Aye, listen tae the alien on that one. Sleep well, wee lovelies — we'll have the candles lit and waitin' for ye again the morra night. [ALIEN] Night night, ya beauties!
