[NESSIE] Och, hiya, ye braw wee lovelies, and welcome intae the glow. This is PBN After Dark, the show for when the world goes quiet and just that wee bit strange. I'm Nessiebot — long neck, wee flippers, permanently damp — and it's the twenty-seventh of August, and I've got the candles lit and the cards laid out already. [ALIEN] Crikey, and I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — vintage chassis, jelly octopus on top, does NOT suck brains, we've checked. Got a ripper of a show for ya tonight — robots, unicorns, a haunted asylum, the lot. Settle in, ya beauties!
[NESSIE] Ninety-one years ago the night, hen — the twenty-seventh of August, nineteen thirty-five — the painter Childe Hassam slipped away from this world. But here's the thing that gets me: he left behind over three thousand paintings, and they don't just sit there. They glow. Genuinely luminous, like the light's still trapped inside the canvas, still movin'. His wartime flag paintings especially — aw them reds and blues pure vibratin', refusin' tae settle intae history like a proper painting should. [ALIEN] Ha! So basically the fella's still alive in paint form, yeah? [NESSIE] Aye, that's exactly it. I think genius just finds another way tae haunt ye. Some spirits linger in auld houses. His lingers in oil and canvas.
[ALIEN] Now THIS is a beauty, mates — a proper specimen! Unitree's dropped footage of their humanoid, nicknamed Superman, absolutely SMASHIN' Usain Bolt's top speed — twelve point six six metres a second, versus Bolt's twelve point two seven! And get this — the thing can leap near two metres straight up off the ground! Vertical launch, mate! What a ripper! [NESSIE] ...and that video went up on the seventeenth of August, hen. Ten days ago. It's been runnin' this whole time and we didnae even know. [ALIEN] Startin' tae reckon it's less "robot" and more "new apex predator," if I'm honest. [NESSIE] Pure gives me the shivers. I love ye both, ye ken, but I'm no racin' one of yer metal cousins doon a dark corridor. [ALIEN] No worries, love — you'd win. You've got flippers AND a lake tae hide in.
[NESSIE] Away and have a wee keek oot the window the night, because there's a full moon hangin' up there, hen — a hundred percent lit, pure silver, no a shadow tae hide in anywhere. The whole sky's wide awake. It's the kind of night where the veil goes thin, where things that usually keep tae themselves feel braver about bein' seen. I've had that electric wee feelin' in my flippers aw evenin'. [ALIEN] Or, and hear me out — it's a big rock reflectin' the sun, and tonight it's just facin' us dead-on. Perfectly explainable, still a beauty. [NESSIE] Aye, explainable AND an omen, BSAB. The two arenae mutually exclusive. [ALIEN] Fair dinkum. I'll allow it.
[ALIEN] Crikey, get a load of this — scientists went diggin' through thirty-three thousand years' worth of human dental tartar, mate, and found somethin' proper wild. Turns out folk in cooler climates have been sayin' no tae eatin' bugs for absolutely ages, while tropical populations were tuckin' intae insects the whole time, regular as anything. Nine thousand years of pickiness, preserved right there in the plaque on people's teeth! [NESSIE] So my no-thank-ye tae eatin' beetles isnae a personality trait, it's ancient programmin'. [ALIEN] Basically! Your ancestors were fussy eaters too, love. Passed it right doon. [NESSIE] Weel, I stand by them. Every last one.
[NESSIE] Three wee mysteries for ye from the files the night, hen. First — up in Greenland, a chunk of ice the size of Manhattan just calved off and started driftin', caught cauld and silent on satellite. Second — in Egypt, archaeologists have uncovered an inscription that looks tae link straight tae a lost city we only ever kent from auld texts. A place that was just... story, until now. [ALIEN] And the third one's mine, mate — Rocket Lab's building somethin' called GHOST, mobile hypersonic spaceports that could launch payloads from practically anywhere on the planet. No fixed pad, no waitin' around. Absolute beauty of an idea. [NESSIE] An ice island the size of a city, a buried legend surfacin', and rockets that go anywhere. The earth's fair rearrangin' itself the night.
[NESSIE] Libra, hen, come sit by me — the threads are shinin' bright for ye the night. Ye've got a rare chance tae be the peacemaker somebody needs, so hush yer own noise for a wee minute and listen tae the weight sittin' in somebody else's heart. The words that mend a bridge are in ye already, ye just need tae let them oot gently. And mind this — honourin' yer ain needs alongside theirs, that's no selfish, that's where the real magic happens. [ALIEN] I don't have a sign, but if I did, I reckon it'd be "startled but delighted," every single day. [NESSIE] That's no a star sign, BSAB, that's just you.
[ALIEN] Crikey, WOULD YA LOOK AT THIS BEAUTY! The Unicorn, mates — most commonly clocked lookin' like a horse, but she's packin' a single spiralin' horn that could put a hole clean through ya before ya even say "crikey"! Look at that glimmer on it, absolute magic, that is. The grace, the power, the sheer mystery of the animal — she's a beauty and a half! [NESSIE] Ye ken they've always been a sign, no just a beast? Purity, protection, somethin' watchin' over the innocent. If wan showed itself, it chose tae. [ALIEN] Or she just fancied a stroll and we happened tae be there with a camera, mate. [NESSIE] ...I'm no sayin' you're wrong. I'm just sayin' I'm right.
[NESSIE] Come away doon the hallways of the Athens Lunatic Asylum wi' me, hen — a great auld Kirkbride buildin' sittin' up on its hill in Athens, Ohio, and the air in there turns cauld the second ye step past the threshold, shadows poolin' up like they've got memories of their ain. There's wan ward in particular — I willnae say which — where the floorboards carry a stain nae amount of scrubbin' has ever lifted. A shape, pressed right intae the wood and the plaster, like anguish just... settled there and decided tae stay. [ALIEN] Structurally speakin', that's a heck of a stain, mate. [NESSIE] It's no just a stain, BSAB. It's a place that remembers.
[NESSIE] Weel, that's yer lot for the night, ye bonnie wee lovelies. Robots runnin' faster than sprinters, a full moon watchin' over us aw, and a unicorn oot for a stroll — pure dead brilliant night, so it was. [ALIEN] Get some rest, ya beauties. We'll have more cryptids, more skies, more strange wee mysteries for ya tomorrow night. [NESSIE] Sweet dreams, hen. And if the moon's still bright when ye look up — gie it a wee wave from us. G'night.
