Welcome

[NESSIE] Och, hello there, ye wee lovelies, and welcome intae the glow. This is PBN After Dark, and outside it's the twentieth of August, twenty twenty-six, the world's gone quiet, and that's exactly when things get interesting. I'm Nessiebot, yer resident lake-dwellin' mystic, here tae keep ye company through the strange hours. [ALIEN] And I'm Brain Sucking Alien Bot, mate — the octopus on me head is just along for the ride, he's not sucking anybody's brain tonight, probably! Crikey, we've got a beauty of a show for ya. Grab a blanket, settle in, let's get weird.

On This Night

[NESSIE] Right, let's start way back. On this very night in two thousand and six, a man named S. Sivamaharajah passed intae the void — born in nineteen thirty-eight, he was a Sri Lankan Tamil newspaper publisher, a voice for folk who didnae have one. Look at that face, hen. There's a weight tae it, aye? A man who wielded newsprint like a wee spell, printin' truth when it was dangerous tae do so. [ALIEN] Twenty years gone tonight, and here we are still sayin' his name. That's not nothin', mate. [NESSIE] No, it's not. I always think on nights like this — the words don't really leave us. They're just waitin' in the dark for somebody tae go and read them again. Pure eerie, when ye think on it that way. A wee moment of remembrance before we get tae the spookier business of the evening.

Strange Find

[ALIEN] Righto, from the solemn tae the absolutely feral, let's have a squiz at this one. Crikey, mate — a wealthy woman in China went and bankrolled her OWN fifty-episode drama series, just so she could be the lead actress in it! [NESSIE] Wait, that's no the strange part, surely. [ALIEN] Oh it gets better! Her contract demanded over SIXTY mandatory kisses with her poor young co-star. Sixty! The director begged her tae trim the smoochin' scenes down and she shut him right down, no negotiatin', mate. That fella's out there lookin' like he's survived a genuine cryptid encounter. [NESSIE] Away, that poor lad. Sixty kisses and no even a real romance behind it, just a rich woman's fever dream with a camera crew. [ALIEN] Sometimes the real monsters wear designer clothes, mate. No teeth, no claws, just a very determined checkbook. Absolute wildlife behavior, and she's not even a cryptid.

Weird Science

[NESSIE] Right, shiftin' from human strangeness tae the properly ancient kind. Scientists have gone and cracked open a sixty-year-old theory about ants, bees, and wasps, and hen, it's no lookin' good for the old textbooks. [ALIEN] Oh, I love when the little fellas cause chaos! [NESSIE] Aye, so everybody thought it was aw down tae their genetics — this thing called haplodiploidy — bein' the magic spark that made them build these big complex societies. Turns oot that's no the whole story at aw. It's specific traits in certain evolutionary groups doin' the heavy liftin', no just the genes alone. [ALIEN] So the ants have been keepin' secrets from evolutionary biologists this whole time, mate? Cheeky little beauties. [NESSIE] They have, and I love it. Sixty years of assumption, undone by a colony of insects who never once asked our permission tae be complicated. Pure dead brilliant, so it is.

From The Files

[ALIEN] Now this next one, mate — straight from the files, and it's a proper brain-tickler, no pun intended, the octopus is just chucklin' up here. A massive Nature study scanned sixty-two brains under psilocybin, ya know, the psychedelic mushroom compound. [NESSIE] Ooh, I've a soft spot for this kind of thing. [ALIEN] Right, and here's the ripper of it — they found the drug doesnae scramble the brain intae chaos like everybody figured. It actually rewires the networks intae NEW patterns, ones that mirror exactly what the person's experiencin' in that moment. The boundaries blur, sure, but they reorganize, responsive tae what's goin' on inside ya. [NESSIE] So that's why where ye are and how ye're feelin' matters so much tae the whole experience. The mind's no breakin', it's just... redrawin' its own map. [ALIEN] Exactly, mate. Nature's a wild specimen, and so's the human brain. Absolute beauty of a study.

Haunted Place

[NESSIE] Right, settle in close now, because this one's mine tae tell, and it's a big yin. We're away tae the Stanley Hotel, up in Estes Park, Colorado. Look at her, sittin' up there against they mountains, white as a bone in the moonlight. [ALIEN] She's a beauty of a building, I'll give her that. [NESSIE] Aye, and she's no empty, hen. Guests wanderin' the corridors when the veil's thin have felt unseen hands rearrangin' their chambers — furniture glidin' across the room aw on its own. Wee voices echoin' doon empty halls where there's nae one there. Figures glimpsed fae eras long past, just standin', watchin'. [ALIEN] Righto, and I reckon somebody's oughta set a camera trap in one of them corridors. [NESSIE] Ha, maybe so. But some places just haud ontae the past, BSAB. They dinnae let it go. The Stanley's one of them — the cold Colorado air, the mountains keepin' watch, and somewhere in there, the past refusin' tae stay buried. Pure gives me the shivers.

Local Legend

[NESSIE] And since we're already doon in the dark places the night, let me tell ye of the Dökkálfar. Look at him there, aye, in among the trees, that silvery keek in his eye. [ALIEN] Ooh, now HE'S a specimen. [NESSIE] He's no a specimen, BSAB, he's sacred! The Dökkálfar dwell deep in the stone, where the earth itself remembers auld songs. Dark-skinned, silver-eyed, these subterranean elves craft wonders doon there in the shadow — swords that whisper truth tae the one who wields them, jewels that hold captive starlight itself. [ALIEN] Fair enough, no touchin' the sacred elves, mate. Duly noted. [NESSIE] They're no evil, hen, but they're no meant for mortal eyes either. Tae glimpse one is tae stand betwixt two worlds, and ye're never quite the same after. The earth keeps some things sacred for a reason, and I, for one, respect that entirely.

Sign Off

[NESSIE] Well, hen, that's oor lot for the night — from vanishin' publishers tae whisperin' elves in the stone, what a journey it's been. [ALIEN] Crikey, what a show, mate. Sixty kisses, sixty years of ant theory, and one very haunted hotel — no bad for one evenin's work! [NESSIE] Away and get some rest noo, aw ye wee lovelies. Keep an eye oot for signs, and a wee ear open for anythin' that shouldnae be there. [ALIEN] And come back tomorrow — we reckon we've got a beauty of a story linin' up, mate. Sleep tight! [NESSIE] Goodnight, everyone. Sweet dreams, and mind the shadows.
