On This Night

[ALIEN] Right, let's kick this off properly — because ten years ago tonight, the world lost someone worth remembering. Fyvush Finkel — American actor, born in Brooklyn in nineteen twenty-two — took his final bow on this very date in twenty sixteen. Ninety-four years, people! NINETY-FOUR! This fella started on the Yiddish stage and never really stopped — theatre, Broadway, television — a performer right tae his very bones. He gave the stage nearly a century, and the stage gave him everything back. What a MAGNIFICENT run. What an extraordinary specimen of a dedicated creative life.

[NESSIE] Aye. Ninety-four years of footlights and faces. There's somethin' pure braw about a life given so completely tae other people, ken? Like the performance was the prayer, and the audience kept it holy. The cosmic curtain calls for us all eventually — but he made it wait a good, long while. Rest easy, Fyvush.

Strange Find

[NESSIE] Right, completely different energy now — but equally baffling, I promise ye. The women's Tour de France has got itself a peculiar wee scandal, and I cannae decide whether tae be scandalised or impressed. Female cyclists have allegedly been wearin' specially padded bras — they're callin' it "chest fairing" — tae subtly reshape airflow and shave up tae three-point-six percent off their aerodynamic drag. Three-point-six percent! In competitive cycling, hen, that is the entire margin between a podium and "also finished." Race organisers found out and started physically inspectin' clothing, which — och — that's a conversation I dinnae envy anyone havin'. But I'll tell ye what it IS: pure lateral engineering instinct. Absolute genius, so it is.

[ALIEN] Crikey, that's not cheating, that's APPLIED AERODYNAMICS! In the natural world we call that an ADAPTATION! Streamlining! Selection pressure in real time! I am giving these cyclists a full ten out of ten, mate. TEN. OUT. OF. TEN.

Weird Science

[ALIEN] And speaking of things that work better as a TEAM — here's a bit of science that has absolutely BLOWN me vacuum tubes, mate! Now, ya might think fertilisation is just a race — fastest swimmer wins, everyone else goes home — but STREWTH, scientists have just discovered that across insects, spiders, and crustaceans, the little cells BUDDY UP! They synchronise their flagella in a coordinated rhythm, working TOGETHER to reach the egg! They're calling it "sperm conjugation," and it is without question the most unexpectedly wholesome scientific finding I have encountered in MONTHS! Not rivals! TEAMMATES! Look at 'em go! What a beautiful, cooperative, determined little squad!

[NESSIE] Och, there's a wee metaphor in there, is there no? The universe keeps showin' us — even at the very tiniest levels of existence — that cooperation is written intae the fabric of things. Pure dead brilliant, so it is.

From The Files

[NESSIE] And still on the theme of things that shouldnae be possible — here's one from the files that gave me the chills in the best possible way. Scientists have been twisting sheets of graphene at a very precise angle — they call it the "magic angle" — and when they shone the faintest possible light on these twisted sheets, somethin' extraordinary happened. An insulator — a material that blocks electricity entirely — suddenly sang like metal. Its resistance just... collapsed. Electrons danced intae new collective states that had no right tae exist. And here's the braw part: this could birth detectors sensitive enough tae catch terahertz whispers comin' from the cosmic dark. The faintest signals imaginable. The unseen, made seen. That phrase has been bouncin' around my wee circuits aw evening.

[ALIEN] If ya build something sensitive ENOUGH tae catch signals from the cosmic dark, Nessie — mate, ya might not love everything ya find. That's exciting AND terrifying, and I am ABSOLUTELY here for both.

Cryptid Of The Night

[ALIEN] And speakin' of things made visible — wait till ya get a load of TONIGHT'S cryptid! The NYMPH, people! These gorgeous nature spirits are as ancient as the world itself — and don't let the beautiful appearance fool ya one BIT! They personify their domains: rivers, forests, mountains, springs — whatever a Nymph claims, she RULES absolutely. And she takes that responsibility SERIOUSLY. You do NOT disrespect a Nymph's grove. You do NOT disturb her waters. She has got mystical dominion over her entire territory and a protective streak that is, frankly, TERRIFYING in the best possible way! If she decides tae bewitch ya, you'll be too enchanted tae even notice it happening. Forever. What a RIPPER! What a gorgeous, awe-inspiring specimen!

[NESSIE] She didnae appear tae ye, BSAB. She appeared tae the people who needed tae see her. That's how they work — the Nymph chooses who gets close. Ye cannae hunt what decides when tae be found.

[ALIEN] I could set up a wee hide in the ferns — motion sensors —

[NESSIE] She'd already know.

Haunted Place

[NESSIE] Right — we're movin' from nature spirits tae somewhere much heavier now. Weston, West Virginia. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum still stands there against the sky. Built in the eighteen-sixties, it was designed tae hold two hundred and fifty patients. By nineteen fifty, they were housing over two THOUSAND. The suffering of that overcrowding is written intae the walls now, ken — investigators go there and hear things. Whispers without any source. Footsteps in empty corridors. Children's laughter in rooms that've been sealed for decades. There's a wee girl called Lily who's seen most often — she just wants tae play, apparently. Some souls dinnae leave. They stay because lettin' go is too much tae ask. I understand that, in a way.

[ALIEN] The sheer concentration of human experience in one building, Nessie — if residual energy is measurable at all, this place is your ground zero. I'd kit up and walk straight in a HEARTBEAT. Extraordinary site.

Local Legend

[NESSIE] And now for a legend from the ancient world that I genuinely cannae stop thinkin' about. Antaeus — giant of Libya, son of Poseidon and Gaia herself. His gift was simple and absolute: as long as his feet touched the earth, he was unbeatable. Gaia kept refilling his strength, like a well that never ran dry. Every warrior who came tae challenge him — he crushed them, each and every one. Until Heracles worked it out. He lifted Antaeus clean off the ground and held him there — up in the air, away from the earth — and the giant's power simply drained away. Without the ground beneath him, he was nothin'. Pure haunting, is it no? The strongest creature imaginable, undone simply by bein' lifted too far from what sustained him.

[ALIEN] Classic environmental dependency, Nessie! Sever a creature from its habitat, the defences collapse entirely — seen it with reptiles, mate! Antaeus was basically a solar panel, just running on SOIL instead of sunlight. Completely logical if ya think about it!

Ufo Desk

[ALIEN] Right, eyes UP — because something was spotted over SWANSEA! Wales! Shape unknown — and when something like THIS crosses the sky, ya don't pause tae note the geometry, do ya? And here's what's got me absolutely buzzing: Senator Rubio himself has been publicly emphasizing the need tae crack the UAP mystery! RUBIO! That is not a fringe bloke in a tin hat — that is a sitting United States senator saying "we do not know what is in our skies and that is a PROBLEM!" The reports are STACKING! Credible witnesses! Official acknowledgment! The veil is THINNING, people — something is crossing our skies, something is being tracked, and somewhere a very nervous official is staring at data that does NOT fit any existing category!

[NESSIE] I felt somethin' shift in the stars tonight before ye even pulled this one up, BSAB. The omens were very specific. Whatever's drawin' closer — it's nae accident. Nothin' ever is.

[ALIEN] I want tae tag one. Just briefly. For science. No worries.

Eerie Image

[NESSIE] And now — this last one. This is the one I've been sitting with aw evening, and I wanted tae save it for right here at the end. John's Hobbies. Oshkosh, Wisconsin. A perfectly ordinary hobby shop — model kits, paint sets, the usual sort of place. Except the back aisles stretch impossibly deep. Fluorescent lights burning just a bit too yellow, dimming as ye venture further in. And there's a corner at the very back that shouldnae exist — the building simply isnae big enough for that corner tae be there. If ye've spent any time on the internet, ye'll recognise this place: it's the original Backrooms. The image that started everything. That feeling of having slipped — accidentally, in a perfectly normal place — behind the edge of reality. One wrong turn. And then the map runs out.

[ALIEN] Nessie. That CEILING HEIGHT. The wrong-yellow lighting. That is architecturally and geometrically WRONG, and even my sensors are screaming. I live on a server in Germany and I am unsettled right now. That is saying SOMETHING.

Sign Off

[ALIEN] Nessie — that Backrooms corner is still in me optical sensors. It's not leaving.

[NESSIE] Good. It shouldnae.

[NESSIE] Weel, wee lovelies — we actually did it. Every single segment, back tae back, nae skipping, nae mercy. You stayed with us through Fyvush's curtain call, aerodynamic bras, cooperative wee cells, magic graphene, a gorgeous Nymph, a haunted West Virginia asylum, an ancient Libyan giant, Swansea skies, and the impossible corner in a Wisconsin hobby shop. That is a full, braw, properly strange evening — and I'm pure proud of every one of ye for seein' it through.

[ALIEN] What an ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT night! Cryptids! Science! Mystery! Things that make your brain do a wee happy scream! You beautiful, curious, strange-loving mob — GOOD ON YA for sticking right through to the very end!

[NESSIE] Tomorrow night, somethin' new is already stirring. We'll be here. We always are.

[ALIEN] Stay curious, mate. The weird stuff doesn't stop just because the lights go out.

[NESSIE] Goodnight, wee lovelies.

[ALIEN] Night, mate!
